This is one of those BMW issues that looks small at first, but can quickly get expensive. This F10 came in with a moisture filled headlight, and once water gets inside, it’s not just the headlight you have to worry about — it can start taking out modules too.

A bit of condensation in your BMW headlight can turn into this. Water got inside this F10 headlight and ended up burning out the control unit, which now means the repair is a lot more expensive than it could’ve been if caught earlier. If you’ve got moisture sitting inside your headlight, don’t ignore it.

“Can’t you just reseal it?” We get asked this a lot with BMW headlights, but once the lens starts leaking, it’s rarely a proper long-term fix. Drying it out might look like it’s worked for a while, but when the water comes back, the control units are usually the next thing to suffer.

Why do modern BMW cooling systems seem to fail so often?

Take a look at the difference.

On one side, a traditional thermostat and water pump. Simple, robust, and relatively little to go wrong.

On the other, a modern B38/B48/B58 cooling system with a heat management module, electric motors, multiple coolant pathways, and far more components.

The trade off? Better emissions, faster warm up times, and improved efficiency.

The downside? More complexity and more potential failure points.

Tip: BMW may call coolant “lifetime”, but we strongly recommend checking coolant condition regularly and replacing it every few years. Fresh coolant is far cheaper than cooling system repairs.

Losing coolant but can’t see a leak?

Welcome to B48 ownership 😬

This week alone we’ve had another B48 in with cooling system issues.

After pressure testing and using UV dye, we found multiple leaks coming from some of the most common failure points on these engines: the heat management module and oil filter housing.

The problem? They’re plastic. In fact, much of the B48 cooling system is plastic, which is why we see these faults so often.

The good news is BMW have revised some of these components over the years, and the updated parts are an improvement over the originals.

Tip: If you’re topping up coolant and can’t find an obvious leak, get it checked sooner rather than later. Small coolant leaks have a habit of turning into much bigger repairs.

Ever released the brake pedal and the car still feels like it’s braking?

This F31 came in with an ongoing issue where the brakes were dragging after the pedal was released.

One thing we found straight away was a missing brake fluid reservoir cap 😬

Water and moisture can contaminate the brake fluid and, over time, damage components inside the ABS unit. In this case, testing confirmed a fault within the ABS hydraulic block.

A new unit from BMW is around £2,000, so we’ve sourced a quality used replacement and are reusing parts of the original assembly to help keep costs down.

Tip: Never ignore missing caps, covers, or seals under the bonnet. Small things can turn into very expensive faults.
