👀🚗 MIRRORS: LOOK. LEARN. RESPOND.
“Check your mirrors.”
It’s something every learner hears countless times.
But simply looking in the mirror isn’t enough.
At DTMK, we want you to remember three things:
👀 LOOK
What’s happening around and behind you?
🧠 LEARN
What does that information tell you? Is someone following closely? Is a cyclist alongside you? Is somebody overtaking? Has a motorcycle appeared?
🚗 RESPOND
Does what you’ve seen change what you’re about to do?
That’s the important bit.
Imagine you’re planning to move around a parked vehicle.
You check your mirror and discover another car is already overtaking you.
Your mirror check shouldn’t simply earn you a mental tick.
It should change your decision.
The same applies when slowing down. If somebody is extremely close behind, you may still need to slow or stop, but knowing they’re there can influence how early and progressively you respond, where circumstances allow.
A mirror is there to give you information.
And information is only useful if you actually do something with it.
So rather than trying to remember:
“Have I checked my mirrors?”
Try remembering:
👀 LOOK. 🧠 LEARN. 🚗 RESPOND.
That’s when mirror checks stop being something you do for your instructor and start becoming something you do because you’re driving.
