On wet roads, tyres with more tread can make a significant difference to braking performance. A tyre worn down to the legal minimum of 1.6 mm may take considerably longer to stop than one with 3 mm of tread.

Your tyres are the only part of your car in contact with the road, so keeping them in good condition matters.

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. But we recommend changing them at 3mm, as by then roughly 80% of the usable tread has gone and your ability to stop quickly drops significantly.

Tyre pressures are just as important. Uneven pressures change how much of each tyre grips the road, which can make your vehicle unstable and harder to control under braking. Getting them right also improves fuel efficiency and helps your tyres last longer.
