🔧 SUSPECTED HEAD GASKET FAILURE? HERE'S HOW WE INVESTIGATE IT!

Not every engine fault can be diagnosed by simply plugging in a computer!

In this video, our technician Rich is carrying out a CO₂ test to check for combustion gases entering the cooling system, which can indicate a failing head gasket.

But we don't stop there.

Rich then uses a specialist inspection camera to look inside the engine's cylinders, where he identifies coolant present.

Finding coolant inside a cylinder, alongside the results of the CO₂ test, provides further evidence of a possible head gasket failure.

This is why proper diagnostics are so important. Rather than guessing and replacing expensive components, we carry out multiple tests to build a clearer picture of what's actually happening inside the engine.

🔧🚗 CV JOINT FAILURE – THIS IS WHY VEHICLE INSPECTIONS MATTER! ⚠️

Another vehicle in the workshop at Ignition Autos, and this time we've discovered a serious issue with the driveshaft!

As you can see from the photo, the CV joint has separated, leaving the joint exposed and requiring attention. ❌

Here’s Rich, one of our Head Technicians, taking us under the bonnet and explaining another real workshop job.

🔧 TURBOCHARGER PROBLEMS – CATCH THEM BEFORE THEY BECOME ENGINE PROBLEMS! 🔧

This photo was taken during an inspection at Edward Street Garage and shows the inside of a vehicle’s turbocharger.

⚠️ WHAT’S GONE WRONG?

The turbo is showing signs of oil contamination/oil ingress within the turbo housing. This can be associated with problems such as worn turbo seals or bearings, oil supply/return issues, or excessive crankcase pressure.

A failing turbo can cause:

❌ Loss of power
❌ Excessive exhaust smoke
❌ Increased oil consumption
❌ Whistling or unusual turbo noises
❌ Engine management/boost faults
❌ Oil entering the intake system
❌ Potential engine or DPF damage if ignored

🔧 WHAT DOES IT NEED?

The turbocharger and associated oil/boost system need to be properly inspected and diagnosed. If turbo failure is confirmed, the turbo will require replacement along with the necessary associated parts and checks.

It’s also important to establish why the turbo has failed. Simply fitting another turbo without checking the oil feed, oil return, intake/boost system and other contributing factors can result in the replacement turbo failing again.

Here’s a great behind-the-scenes look at what happens after a major repair has been completed.

In this video, Martin, our Head Diagnostic Technician over at Edward Street Garage, talks us through a Volvo following its cambelt repair.

Rather than simply finishing the job and handing the keys back, Martin gets underneath the vehicle and shows the completed repair and surrounding areas, checking everything over and making sure the vehicle is ready following the work.

🔧💻 SOMETIMES DIAGNOSTICS IS ABOUT KNOWING WHEN TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX…

Here’s an interesting one from the workshop involving a Mercedes and a solenoid valve fault.

🎥 If you watch the video, you’ll see our technician working underneath the vehicle, accessing the system and carrying out testing alongside our diagnostic equipment to help prove what is actually happening.

Now, here's the interesting bit…

⚠️ The testing method you see in this video isn't necessarily how the manufacturer or a textbook would tell you to carry out the complete test.

So why are we doing it?

Because experienced diagnostics isn't about randomly replacing parts — and it isn't always about blindly following a flow chart either.

Sometimes a technician can use their understanding of how a component operates, what the ECU is commanding and how the system reacts to carry out a controlled test that helps prove or disprove a suspected fault.

That can save valuable diagnostic time and, more importantly, help prevent expensive parts being replaced unnecessarily.

There is a big difference between taking a shortcut and using experience to perform a targeted diagnostic test. 🔍

That's why we invest heavily in training, diagnostic equipment and experienced technicians.

Here’s a great before-and-after comparison from a recent job at Ignition Autos.

⚡ WHY ARE SPARK PLUGS SO IMPORTANT?

Spark plugs ignite the air and fuel mixture inside a petrol engine. Over time, they naturally wear and the electrode gap can increase, making it harder for the ignition system to produce a strong, consistent spark.

Worn spark plugs can contribute to:

❌ Difficult starting
❌ Engine misfires
❌ Rough running or poor idle
❌ Reduced performance
❌ Increased fuel consumption
❌ Engine management lights
❌ Additional strain on ignition coils

🔧 WHAT’S THE FIX?
