We hope everyone had a good bank holiday Easter Weekend. And we were straight back to diagnosing vehicles yesterday.

First vehicle was a Ford Transit Connect 1.5 TDCI 2020 with DPF Faults and also the Mass Air Flow Correlation Fault which we have spoken about in the past and shown. DPF Clean and a new Boost Pipe and this was resolved.

Second Vehicle Land Rover Evoque 2015 2.0 Ingenium Engine this vehicle has absolutely no power and it did have DPF Faults. But the most alarming was the screech under load of the engine. Once we heard this, we were almost certain we were going to see low boost pressure faults along with DPF Faults. We were correct the turbo has failed causing all these problems / symptoms. Timing chain also has moved and was rattling causing Camshaft Faults.

Third Vehicle was another Ford Transit Connect 1.5 TDCI 2020 with DPF Faults however this one had Efficiency Below Threshold, so from there we went straight to the tail pipes and they where heavily saturated in soot and this confirms the DPF is damaged and wants replacing.

As we always express just because you have a DPF Light on the dash or a DPF Fault in the vehicle it is never as straight forward as some people assume.

Recently had a Motorhome in based on a Fiat Ducato chassis in for diagnostics believed to have a blocked DPF.

First thing first full system scan and see what fault codes are present. As you can see the one that was showing was P2454 - Diesel Particulate Trap Hose Line Monitoring For Cold Condition - Signal Invalid. Other fault code is because we have the sensor unplugged.

The key element I taken from the fault was “Signal Invalid” so further testing required loaded up live data and looked at the relevant information to the sensor as you can see above 2000RPM we are still getting 0MBAR reading.

Check the actual pressure in the DPF manually we are getting 9MBAR at idle. So we know we are getting faulty reading from the Pressure Sensor is it the sensor or wiring?

Check the wiring getting the 5V on signal and feed so this vehicle requires a new DPF Pressure Sensor.

Ford Transit Connect 1.5 TDCI 2019 came in with DPF Full on the dash. After diagnosing the vehicle for £45.00 we found the DPF was not blocked and just counting high. It has Mass Air Flow Correlation fault.

From experience and previous testing and diagnosing on these vehicles we know exactly what to look for and it was this little boost pipe very common failure point with these engines.

Another Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0 Ingenium engine. This particular DPF was not cracked or damaged which is a common fault with these engines. But especially blocked blowing 158MBAR at idle normally when blocked they are 40-60MBAR.

Fresh DPF Clean and the readings are now 0MBAR. All work was carried out on the same day from diagnostics to repair.

Thorough diagnostics, testing and checking and not just scanning codes is the key to identifying problems.

We had another 1.6 HDI in that has been to multiple garages saying the DPF was blocked, which was not. Every report given to me by the customer showed an Air Flow Fault, so this is where we started.

Done a smoke test to identify any leaks in the process of checking the intercoolers pipes we noticed they are saturated in oil taken a closer look at the turbo and turbo oil seals have failed.

This thorough diagnostics was £75.00 and the problem identified.

Peugeot Partner 1.6 HDI failed additive tank and a blocked DPF. 95% of the time you have a DPF Light or a blocked DPF there is a cause in this instance a faulty Additive Tank.

2018 Mercedes Sprinter came in with DPF Problems from initial inspection we were getting faulty readings from the Differential Pressure Sensor. We then went to inspect the DPF and noticed it was cracked, we removed the DPF to inspect it further. It was not in the very best condition split were it bolts to the turbo, flexi split, ADBLUE Cat blocked and needing a new DPF Pressure Sensor. All repaired and back on the road for half the price of a new DPF.

Another Nissan Qashqai 1.6 DCI in with DPF Issues. This one taken us by surprise had 30 mbar back pressure at idle showing it was blocked double checked all sensors and pressures and was working as it should be. However once dissembled for the clean we found the pipe to be split which would be affecting the differential pressures.

DPF was cleaned, dried and flow tested and put back on the vehicle now idling between 0-5mbar back pressure. We also replaced the differential pressure pipes.

Here at the DPF Clinic we don't just scan for codes with the Diagnostics and start replacing parts. We look at Live Data and see what the sensors are doing and also check the components manual to see if they are working correctly. All this takes time but by doing so can save the customer £££'s in correctly diagnosing the problem.
