A bit of a different job today for us. Not something we usually do. Tig welding up a small hole in the rear of a gearbox casing on a VW Crafter. The welding work didn’t take that long but as with ally it’s all in the prep. Cleaned up the casing first and degreased it.
Then we ground it back to give us some cleaner material to work with.
Then to help with the weld we put a copper backing piece inside. Ran the tig torch across the areas to be welded a few times to help remove more impurities before finally welding up the hole.
Just to rebuild the box back up and re fit it along with a new clutch.
To replace the casing would’ve been up over of £800 for a new part so much cheaper to repair.

A Ford Kuga recently came in with air con issues. A vacuum test showed no leaks but a nitrogen test proved otherwise. We had to strip the car down to exposed the leak.
We’ve found in the past a vacuum test passes where the nitrogen test fails. The reason is the vacuum closes the holes if they are small. The nitrogen creates pressure as the system does exposing the leaks.
A new condenser fitted and no leaks found on the system, so all is good again.

All our brake callipers, once removed for sale, start off not looking great, but they then go through a process of being checked, making sure the pistons aren’t seized and bleed ni***es aren’t seized or snapped.
They then get cleaned up, labelled and sealed in a bag ready for the customer.

Some of the materials we salvage from a ELV to be recycled, wiring looms, electronics, and aluminium. From radiators to heater matrix’s, on older cars you could average about 30kg of wire, it may sound like a lot of work for so little but every little helps. Vehicle Recyclers' Association
