Happy Halloween everyone! Forget massive spiders and haunted houses, these are the things that really keep Dave awake at night:

🎃 A DIY welding job that looks like a patchwork quilt.
🎃 “I Googled it and had a go myself.”
🎃 A mystery electrical fault with approximately 47 wires.
🎃 Putting a tool somewhere "safe" and never seeing it again.
🎃 A shortage of good tea and chocolate biscuits.

❄️ Is your car ready for winter?

The mornings are getting colder, the evenings are getting darker, and nobody wants to discover their car has other plans when they're already late for work.

So let's take five minutes now to give your car a quick winter check.

Here's what to look out for…

🔋 Battery: Is it starting to sound a bit sluggish? Cold weather can put extra strain on your battery.
🛞 Tyres: Check the tread depth and tyre pressures. You need good grip when the roads get wet, muddy or icy.
💡 Lights: Check all your lights are working, especially now you're driving in the dark more often.
🌧️ Wipers: Are they clearing the screen properly, or just smearing the rain around?
🧊 Screenwash and antifreeze: Make sure your screenwash is suitable for freezing temperatures and your engine coolant has the correct antifreeze protection.

It's much better to spot a little problem now than discover a big one on a freezing Monday morning.

Weld of the Week 🔧 This was a BIG project.

This BMW came in with the rear quarter and sill area in a serious state. Rusty, falling apart and well beyond a patch repair.

So Dave did it properly.

📝First: a template, hand drawn and cut to fit exactly.
👨‍🏭Then new sections fabricated from Zintec steel (the higher quality, zinc-coated material we use as standard here because it resists corrosion far better than ordinary mild steel.)
🔥Then the welding itself, piece by piece, until it looked good as new.

Behind that tidy dashboard? There’s a LOT going on. 🤯

Last week Dave removed and replaced a heater matrix on a Peugeot Boxer and if you’ve never seen the inside of a dashboard, let’s just say it's a jungle in there!

But with winter arriving and temperatures dropping, having a working heater isn’t really optional and the customer who owns this Boxer is very glad they got it sorted it when they did.

This is exactly the kind of job that looks simple from the outside but takes real knowledge and patience to do properly.

But we don’t sweat, because Dave knows exactly what he’s doing. 🔧

If your car suddenly starts making a weird noise, don't just turn the radio up! 🙉

Squealing? Could be brakes/belts.
Grinding? Worth getting checked promptly.
Knocking? Don't ignore it.
Clicking when turning? Could be something in the drivetrain.
Hissing? Could have several causes.

🔊Strange noises don't always mean something expensive is wrong. But they're usually worth investigating before they become something expensive.

Your vehicle might have one of these. You probably don't know what it is. And you definitely don't want to have to pay to replace it. 😂

This is a DPF, or Diesel Particulate Filter.

It's fitted to diesel vehicles to trap soot and other particles from the exhaust.

But over time, they can become blocked. And we've had plenty of customers come to us after being told they need a new one.

Except sometimes, they don't.

A professional clean can often restore a DPF that's blocked with soot and ash, rather than replacing the whole thing.

We clean loose DPFs here at O'Reilly's Repairs, potentially saving you the cost of a brand new one.

So if you've been told you've got a DPF light on your dashboard or a DPF needs replacing, talk to us before you order the expensive bit. 🔧
