Ferrari first introduced the semi-automatic paddle-shift gearbox to Formula 1 on the 1989 Ferrari 640, allowing drivers to change gear from paddles behind the steering wheel without taking a hand off the wheel or using a traditional gear lever. It was a major technical breakthrough, and by the mid-1990s the concept had reshaped Grand Prix car design.

Then, in 1997, Ferrari brought that thinking to the road with the 355 F1.
At a time when Aston Martin was building somewhat agricultural front-engined grand tourers, Porsche was saying farewell to the air-cooled 911 and Lamborghini’s Diablo remained a spectacularly archaic analogue brute, Ferrari were changing the supercar landscape. Combining the beauty, sound and delicacy of one of the great modern-classic Ferraris with a transmission concept direct from Formula 1, a technology that would go on to define the generations of performance cars.
