GDL is coming to Northern Ireland. But what does it actually mean for young drivers?

From 1 October 2026, newly qualified drivers in Northern Ireland will face a more structured system designed to help them gain experience more safely.

That includes: • A minimum six-month learning period • Mandatory training recorded in a logbook • A two-year restricted driver period • Night-time restrictions for some young drivers • Passenger restrictions for newly qualified drivers under 24 • Learners being allowed on motorways with an ADI
The aim is simple.

Safer drivers. Safer roads.

Passing the test is only the beginning. The highest-risk period often comes afterwards, when a new driver is suddenly making every decision alone.

Could something similar work in Great Britain?

🎉 ANOTHER 1ST TIME PASS FOR THE i-DriveSafe TEAM! 🎉🚗💨

A massive congratulations to Rebecca, who smashed her driving test first time at Chadderton Driving Test Centre this morning! 🥳👏

Those early Saturday morning lessons certainly paid off! Rebecca originally started learning in a manual before making the switch to automatic, and she's worked incredibly hard ever since.

One thing that really stands out is Rebecca's attitude towards learning. She would actually research what she was going to be working on before her next lesson. 👏 That preparation, commitment and willingness to learn has certainly paid off.

And a big congratulations to our i-DriveSafe automatic instructor Ian. Superb job, mate! 👏 Another pupil coached to a fantastic first-time result. 💪

Well done, Rebecca! Enjoy that full licence and stay safe out there! 🚗💨

Safe driving for life. ❤️

📸 THINK SPEED CAMERAS ONLY CATCH SPEEDING?

Technology on UK roads has moved on considerably.

We now have different types of enforcement technology, including fixed speed cameras, average-speed cameras and newer AI road-safety cameras.

Some of the latest AI camera systems being used by police can identify potential offences such as:

📱 Using a handheld mobile phone while driving
🚗 Not wearing a seatbelt

And the technology can capture clear images through the windscreen, including at night.

One recent deployment by Sussex Police recorded more than 2,000 offences in just four weeks.
But here's the important bit...

This shouldn't be about knowing where the cameras are or slowing down just because you see one.

Safe driving is what you do when nobody is watching.

Drive at an appropriate speed.

Wear your seatbelt.

Put the phone away.

Concentrate on the road.

Technology may be getting smarter, but ultimately, the safest driver is the one who doesn't need a camera to change their behaviour.

Did you realise camera technology had advanced this much? 👀

Speed cameras are one of the most controversial parts of driving in...

🎉 ANOTHER 1ST TIME PASS FOR THE i-DriveSafe TEAM! 🎉

A massive well done to Alistair and his biceps! 💪👏🤣

What an unbelievable drive from this great lad!
First time at Bredbury Driving Test Centre with just 3 driving faults! 👏🚗

You listened intently throughout your training, took everything on board and showed the examiner exactly what you were made of.
Thankfully, you didn't give the examiner the same cheeky chat you've given me every lesson...
"How much can you curl?" 💪🤣

Really proud of you, Alistair. It's been an absolute pleasure, mate.

Now enjoy that FULL licence dropping through the letterbox! 🚘🙌

I don't share statistics like this to frighten young drivers. I share them because we need to ask what more we can do to change them.

As driving instructors, I believe we have an important part to play.

Learning to drive shouldn't simply be about preparing someone to pass a driving test. Training needs to be as close to real-life driving as we can reasonably make it.

That means experiencing different roads, speeds, weather and traffic conditions. It means learning to deal with distractions, pressure from other road users, rural roads, dual carriageways and unfamiliar situations.

But most importantly, it's about developing the ability to recognise risk, anticipate what could happen next and make good decisions independently.

Because one day we won't be sitting next to them.
The real goal isn't just a driving licence.

It's giving a new driver the skills and mindset to stay safe for life.

That's where I believe we, as driving instructors, can make a difference.

🎓 Imagine 30 students sitting in a classroom…

They’re all being taught the same subject.

One person understands it almost immediately. 💡
Another needs it explaining differently.

Someone else needs more practice before that light bulb moment happens.

Does that mean the person who took longer will be worse at the subject?

Of course not.

Learning to drive is exactly the same. 🚗

One of the biggest mistakes learners make is comparing their progress with somebody else’s.

“They’ve already been on dual carriageways.”

“They've only had 15 hours.”

“They've booked their test. Why haven't I?”

But here's the thing…

You haven't actually seen that person drive.

And you probably don't know their full story either.

They may have driven on private land before starting lessons. They might have spent years racing go-karts. They could be having two or three lessons a week, or getting hours of private practice with their family.

And simply going on a dual carriageway doesn't automatically mean somebody is further ahead than you.

Learning isn't a checklist or a race to get to the next road. It's about developing skills, understanding risk and becoming increasingly independent.

So don't let friends, family or social media pressure you into thinking you should be at a certain stage.

And don't rush to book a driving test just because somebody else has booked theirs.

💡 Your light bulb moment will come at your own time.

Take the time you need. Build the skills properly. Become a safe, confident and independent driver.
Because passing the driving test isn't the finish line.

It's what happens when you're driving alone afterwards that really matters.

Your journey.

Your pace.

Do it right. 🚗💙

PARENTS… ARE YOU STILL HELPING FROM THE PASSENGER SEAT? 🚗

The driving test is getting closer.

You’re taking your son or daughter out for private practice, but ask yourself:

Are you still saying things like…

👉 “Watch your speed.”
👉 “Check your mirrors.”
👉 “You need to slow down here.”
👉 “Look at that pedestrian.”
👉 “Which lane do you need?”
👉 “There’s a car coming!”

If you are, that private practice is still valuable, but it could also be telling you something important.
They may not be ready to drive independently yet.

On the driving test, the examiner isn't there to coach them through every situation.
And after they pass?

There won't be anyone sitting beside them.

As the test approaches, gradually reduce the help you give and see how much responsibility they can safely take for themselves.

The goal isn't simply to get them through a driving test.

It's to prepare them for the first drive they make alone. 🚗

WOULD YOU PASS YOUR DRIVING TEST…
IF IT WAS TOMORROW? 👀🚗

Forget how many lessons you’ve had.
Ask yourself:

✅ Can I make safe decisions without being prompted?

✅ Can I recognise risk early?

✅ Can I deal with situations I haven’t practised before?

✅ Can I make a mistake, recover and carry on safely?

✅ Am I actually ready to drive alone?
Passing the test matters.

But being able to drive safely when your instructor is no longer sitting next to you matters even more.
Don’t train just to pass a test.

Train to become a driver.

Proud to support the Protect Young Drivers campaign. 💚

As a driving instructor, I believe our responsibility goes far beyond helping someone pass a driving test.

Young and newly qualified drivers remain one of the highest-risk groups on our roads. Anything that encourages evidence-led discussion around how we can better protect them deserves our attention.

Passing the test is the beginning of learning, not the end.

☀️ HOT WEATHER = HOT ROADS = HOT TYRES! 🚗🔥

When temperatures soar, the road surface can become much hotter than the air around us, putting extra stress on your tyres.
Heat can cause tyre pressures to rise, while worn, damaged or incorrectly inflated tyres may be more vulnerable to problems, including a blowout.
Before heading out in extreme heat:

🛞 Check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold
🛞 Check for cracks, bulges or other damage
🛞 Make sure you have plenty of tread
🛞 Don’t forget to check your tyres before a long journey

Your tyres are the only part of your car in contact with the road. Look after them, especially when the temperature rises. ☀️

Safe driving for life.
