👏 JUST 2 DRIVING FAULTS! 👏

A massive congratulations to the lovely Megan, who absolutely smashed her driving test today! 🥳🚗

Megan was always a confident driver, but unfortunately, those dreaded test-day nerves got the better of her on her first attempt.

But she didn't give up! 💪

With a little break, some more coaching and plenty of encouragement from her brilliant instructor Ian, Megan came back stronger than ever!

And what a result! Just TWO driving faults, with the examiner even commenting on what a confident drive it was! 👏🌟

A huge well done to Megan, and a special mention to our very talented instructor, Ian! 🙌

🎬⭐ AND THE STAR OF THE SHOW IS... ELLIE! ⭐🎬

ONE TEST. ONE TAKE. FIRST TIME PASS! 🚗🎉

A massive congratulations to the amazing Ellie, who passed her driving test FIRST TIME with just 4 driving faults at Bredbury Driving Test Centre! 🥳👏

You've absolutely smashed it, Ellie! 🌟

Now, every good film has a story, and Ellie's journey to passing her driving test is definitely one worth sharing! 🎥

Ellie originally started learning in a manual car and was actually getting really good at it. However, when the roads became busier and there was lots happening at once, having to think about gears and clutch control was just another thing to juggle.

So, after a chat with Ellie and her lovely mum, Claire, we decided it was time for a change of script! 🎬

Out went the gears, and in came our very chilled and talented automatic instructor, Ian! 😎🚗
And what a difference it made!

It was a real lightbulb moment for Ellie. 💡 Without the added demands of changing gears, she could concentrate on reading the road, anticipating hazards and making safe decisions.
Everything just clicked!

And today's result proves it was absolutely the right decision. 👏

Ellie, you've been an absolute pleasure to coach. Your determination to pass first time, your positive attitude and your belief in yourself have been fantastic.

And there's a lovely lesson here for other learners. Choosing automatic isn't giving up on manual. It's about finding what works best for YOU. ❤️
Now, with dreams of becoming an actress and following in your dad Les's footsteps, perhaps this is just the beginning of a very exciting story! 🎭🎬

⛽️FUEL PRICES HURT?
5 WAYS TO SAVE!

With the cost of filling up becoming increasingly painful, a few small changes to your driving habits could make a real difference to your fuel bill.

Here are my 5 TOP TIPS to help you save fuel without compromising safety. 👇

1️⃣ LOOK FURTHER AHEAD 👀

Anticipation is one of the most valuable driving skills you can develop.

Look well ahead, read the road and anticipate what other road users might do.

The earlier you spot a developing hazard, the more time you have to respond smoothly.

✅ Less unnecessary braking
✅ Less accelerating
✅ Better fuel economy

2️⃣ BE SMOOTH WITH THE CONTROLS 🦶
Harsh acceleration and unnecessary braking waste fuel.

Accelerate progressively, maintain a steady speed when appropriate and avoid constantly speeding up and slowing down.

Remember, smooth driving isn't slow driving. It's intelligent driving!

3️⃣ CHECK YOUR TYRE PRESSURES 🛞

Underinflated tyres increase rolling resistance, meaning your engine has to work harder.

Check your pressures regularly when the tyres are cold, using the manufacturer's recommended settings.

Correct tyre pressures also improve safety, handling and tyre life.

4️⃣ WATCH YOUR SPEED! 🚦

The faster you travel, particularly at motorway speeds, the harder your engine has to work against aerodynamic drag.

Driving at 70 mph generally uses noticeably more fuel than driving at 60 mph.

Choose a sensible speed for the conditions and leave enough space to maintain a smooth, steady pace.

5️⃣ LOSE THE EXTRA WEIGHT! 🧳

Still carrying things in the boot that you haven't used for months?

Extra weight means extra work for your engine.
Remove unnecessary items and take off roof boxes or roof racks when they're not needed. They can increase aerodynamic drag and fuel consumption.

🚗 HERE'S MY BONUS TIP!

When slowing down, leave the car in gear and come off the accelerator early where appropriate. Modern fuel-injected cars generally use little or no fuel during engine braking.

Never sacrifice control or safety just to save a few drops of fuel.

🚗 YOU'VE PASSED YOUR DRIVING TEST... BUT ARE YOU READY FOR YOUR MATES? 👀

🎉 Passing your driving test is an amazing achievement. Freedom, independence and finally being able to give your friends a lift!

But here's something worth thinking about...
⚠️ Your passengers could be one of your biggest distractions.

Imagine this...

🗣️ Three friends chatting and laughing.
🎵 Music turned up.
📱 Someone showing you something on their phone.

😬 A mate encouraging you to drive faster.
Suddenly, your attention isn't entirely where it needs to be.

🚦 The first few months of independent driving are particularly important.

You're still developing your experience, judgement and ability to anticipate hazards without an instructor sitting beside you.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with taking some time to build your confidence before filling the car with friends.

✅ Start with familiar journeys.
✅ Build experience in different driving conditions.
✅ Set boundaries with passengers.
✅ Never allow peer pressure to influence your decisions.

💙 Remember, being a good driver isn't about impressing your mates. It's about getting everyone home safely.

👨‍👩‍👧 PARENTS: Your support shouldn't stop when your son or daughter passes their driving test. Keep those conversations about safe driving going.

🇬🇧 UK vs GERMANY 🇩🇪

Are we doing enough to prepare new drivers?
I've been looking at how learner drivers are trained in Germany, and there are some interesting differences.

In Germany, learning to drive isn't simply about being ready for the practical test.

For a Category B licence, learners must complete structured theory training and compulsory practical training that includes:

🚗 Rural/country-road driving
🛣️ Autobahn/high-speed driving
🌙 Driving at dusk or at night

There are 12 compulsory 45-minute "special drives":

➡️ 5 rural/country-road sessions
➡️ 4 Autobahn sessions
➡️ 3 dusk/night sessions

And that's on top of the normal practical training needed to reach the required standard.
Compare that with Great Britain.

A learner can legally take a practical driving test without ever having had a professional driving lesson.

There's no compulsory motorway training.
No compulsory night driving.
No compulsory rural-road training.

That's quite a difference.

What also interests me as an instructor is the philosophy behind the German system.

Their training isn't just about operating a vehicle and passing a test. It includes hazard awareness, understanding the consequences of mistakes, responsibility towards other road users and realistic self-assessment.

That's much closer to what I believe driver education should be about:

Not simply passing a test, but developing a safe driver for life.

I'm not suggesting we simply copy Germany. But with young and inexperienced drivers continuing to be disproportionately represented in serious collisions, perhaps we should be asking:

🚗 WHY TREAD MATTERS

Most drivers know the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm.

But knowing the number isn’t the same as understanding why it matters.

Your tyre tread is designed to help move water away from the contact patch, so the tyre can stay connected to the road.

As tread wears down: • less water can be cleared

• grip in the wet reduces
• stopping distances can increase
• the risk of aquaplaning can rise

That’s why I don’t just want learners to memorise the legal minimum.

I want them to understand what the tread is actually doing.

A tyre can be legal and still be far from ideal in wet conditions.

We talk a lot about speed, observation and hazard awareness, but your tyres are the only part of the car actually touching the road.

This month, TyreSafe is encouraging drivers to remember ACT:

Air pressure
Condition
Tread

It sounds simple, but these checks can make a huge difference, especially now the roads are getting wetter.

A tyre can still be legal and yet be far from ideal in poor conditions.

That’s why I always want learners to understand why tread matters, not just remember the legal minimum for a test question.

Good tyre knowledge is part of being a safe driver.
Don’t wait for a warning light, a skid, or a near miss. Check them first.

🚗🌳 LEARNING TO DRIVE? YOU NEED RURAL ROAD EXPERIENCE.

Learning to drive isn't just about navigating town centres, roundabouts and getting ready for the driving test.

Some of the most important training a new driver can receive happens on rural roads.

The latest Department for Transport figures for Great Britain make uncomfortable reading:

⚠️ 923 people were killed on rural roads in 2025.
⚠️ 11,938 people were killed or seriously injured.
⚠️ Rural roads carried around 45% of traffic, yet accounted for 60% of all road fatalities.

And here's another important point: 60mph is a limit, not a target.

Rural driving requires a completely different set of skills.

👀 Reading the road well ahead
🧠 Anticipating what you can't yet see
↪️ Assessing bends correctly
⚖️ Understanding vehicle balance and weight transfer
🚗 Choosing an appropriate speed before the bend
🌳 Recognising limit points
🚜 Anticipating tractors, animals, cyclists and hidden entrances
🛑 Being able to stop safely within the distance you can see to be clear

A learner might be able to handle busy junctions and roundabouts brilliantly, but what happens when they pass their test and find themselves on an unfamiliar country road at night, in the rain, with nobody sitting next to them?

That's why I believe rural-road training should be part of learning to drive, not something drivers are left to figure out after they've passed.

We're not simply preparing people to pass a driving test.

We're preparing them for safe driving for life. 🚗💙

🚗 Should learner drivers be taught more about tyres?

Most people learning to drive are taught the basics needed to pass the test.

But once you pass, tyre safety becomes your responsibility.

That means understanding: • tyre pressures
• tread depth

• damage and condition

• warning lights such as TPMS

• and why tyres matter so much in wet weather
Tyres are the only part of the car in contact with the road.

So yes, I believe learners should be taught more than just the minimum.

Passing the test is important, but understanding how to keep your car safe afterwards matters just as much.

Safe driving is not just about controlling the car. It’s also about maintaining it.
