For over 25 years I have been intensely involved with the beloved Classic Mini, a period that has seen me relentlessly pursuing research and development of a very wide range of products for an equally wide range of clients and customers – encompassing the whole spectrum of Mini performance tuning from engines to tyres and recently including engine, transmission and drive train for MG Midget and A-H Sprites.

And yet another Mini steel flywheel and clutch set up to sort to optimise clamping capability. This really ought not be necessary, but as supplied the clamping capability falls well short of what it should. A bunch of measurements followed by corrective machining before balancing.

Gotta love it when you are supplied a brand spanking new £2500 EN40B Nitrided bespoke crank made to the crank machining company's own drawings comes through with over-sized main bearings (barely 0.001" max clearance on 2.125" diameter journals) and not parallel. Sheesh.

Often asked how big a dish can be machined in to the Russell Engineering pistons I sell. Standard 6.5cc one on right. 16.5cc modified one on left. A lot of elbow room to correct unplanned for CRs on project builds when using what is under the bench rsther than a planned build.

The whole point of taking coolant out of the heater port is to improve cooling with more effective flow. That is until somebody sees tje need to use sealant on the joint. Obviously based on the 'if some is good, more is better so too much is just about right' theory.... half a tube of sealant is somewhat over the top. Sadly something I come across all.too often

Flagging this up once again as it seems a perrenial point of discussion. Plug colour with current fuel types. Pump available E5, this is perfect. Fresh out of the engine just dynoed at Damico Engines to carry out post testing compresdion and leak down tests (very thorough). My dyno of choice for the past 18 years I think, despite being 221 miles and a minimum 4 hour drive away.

Back to the split Weber equipped 1340 dynoed yesterday. The as supplied set up was way off base as they usually are. The only thing not needing changing was the emulsion tubes, and the auxilary vents (only because the new, latest type can not be fitted with the 3.5 earlier ones). Stripped the carb down to make the changes, and found the chokes were seriously jammed in. After managing to pull one out with brute force, the brass locating pin in the choke had sheared off. Had to strip the other carb down off the inlet manifold and linkage to drive the other one out from the throttle disc end. Same result. Fitting the new ones revealed that the locating slot had not been machined far enough to allow the choke to sit where it needed to be. Fantastic work on carbs that cost an leg and an arm to buy.

Interesting one on the Damico Engines dyno today. Mostly a familiar recipe for a stonkin' fast road motor. The tweak was a customer requirement for a split Weber set up for a road motor without bulkhead mods... LHD. Testing requirement.

A little levity, breaking from work for the annual egg rolling event. Eggs are hard boiled, painted, then rolled down a steep and bumpy hill continuously until they fly apart, and we have one remaining mostly intact as the winner. My fantastic lady's entries this year included a couple of characters seen regularly in the news of late. Brilliant! 😁
