Driving through floodwater advice

1. Take an alternative route
Never drive through deep, fast-flowing water and don’t drive through flooded roads if you can avoid them. It’s better to add an extra time to your journey rather than risk your car’s engine and electrics being ruined.
2. Check the water depth
Watch other vehicles go though it first. Unless you’re driving a high-riding 4x4 the maximum depth most experts advise you drive a standard car through is 10cm.
3. Let oncoming vehicles pass
Wait for oncoming vehicles to get through the flood patch before you head into it, especially if they’re larger vehicles or are travelling fast.
4. Drive along the highest point of the road
Most roads dip down at either side, so aim to drive in the middle of the road. That’s another reason to wait for oncoming cars before attempting to cross floodwater.
5. Most Importantly - Don’t drive too fast!
Drive through flood water very very slowly – 3-4mph is an adequate. If you drive too fast you'll not only create a large wave that’ll splash other road users, but you’ll also run the risk of your car’s tyres losing their contact with the road.
Too fast and the force of the water being pushed underneath will also rip off your number plate, wheel trims and plastic under trays. There may also be hidden potholes which will also cause costly damage.

We have a gentleman customer from Luckington who has recently had his car stolen. He is completely stuck without transport. Is there anyone local who knows of a low cost vehicle for sale? It needs to be a reasonable size (or even a small van) as he uses it regularly for his volunteer work. If anyone has any suggestions then please let us know via facebook. Thanks

Mike Tarrant

After thirty five years maintaining the cars of Sherston, Mike is retiring! His last day is tomorrow, Wednesday 23d December!
Mike started at Grays of Sherston in 1984. Way back then my father and I were greatly involved in 24hr vehicle recovery, and the workshop was made available to Mike who at the time was a self employed mechanic.
This arrangement changed after my father retired in 1993 and Mike took on the role of Workshop Manager for Grays with help from two mechanics.
In 2005 I stopped the recovery side of the business and started working more in the workshop alongside Mike.
He is a familiar face not just at the garage but also through 1016, fireworks, Choir and Boules Day so hopefully we shall all still see him busy around the village.
But after many years of loyal service he will finish at Grays at Christmas. Although he may make guest appearances doing holiday cover!
Nicky and I would both like to wish both Mike and Lesley a very happy retirement. Paul

Happy Christmas to all our customers!

Mandatory MOT testing is to be reintroduced from 1 August 2020 as COVID-19 restrictions are slowly lifted.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, drivers were granted a 6-month exemption from MOT testing in March. However, all drivers whose car are due for an MOT test from 1 August will now be required to get a test certificate.

MOT tests are important for road safety and ensure that vehicle parts, including tyres, seatbelts, brakes, lights and exhausts, are in proper working order.

Drivers with an MOT due date before 1 August will still receive a 6-month exemption from testing. However, all vehicles must continue to be properly maintained and kept in a roadworthy condition, and drivers are able to get their MOT sooner should they wish, even if they are exempt from the legal requirement. We strongly recommend that you do this. It will be very busy from September as all the usual MOTs will need doing alongside the postponed ones.

MOT tests
The ongoing situation remains the same, all MOTs will be given a six month extension. This will carry on at least until the end of June as far as we are aware. However, you can request to have your MOT carried out as normal during this period, and we are able to do it.

Along with this we are now able to resume servicing and repairs, please call 01666 840728 to discuss and make an appointment. Alternatively you can text Paul on 07970 123380. Thanks

At the moment the Government, is saying that garages and MOT stations like us can stay open. However we have decided that we will close for all MOT’s and repairs. This is due to health reasons (Paul has asthma) and the fact that our main parts supplier is now closed. However, if you are a key worker who lives in the village, and whose car is essential, we will help if we can - please ring to discuss.
If any of our customers need advice, you can still ring the workshop number 01666 840302

Thanks

p.s. you can check your MOT due date here and they will even send you reminders https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status
