1970s Ford Cortina — A Little Trip Back to Life on Mars?

Freshly imported from South Africa by her new owner, this gorgeous 70s Cortina arrived at VII Car Care ready for some serious attention. 🇿🇦➡️🇬🇧

Cars of this age can be fascinating — and sometimes challenging — once you start investigating the paintwork properly. The roof is the only remaining original paint, with the rest of the car having been refinished at some point in its life.

The paintwork had heavy contamination and extremely thin paint in random areas, with the edges proving particularly fragile.

This is exactly why we always believe in assessing the paintwork properly before reaching for the machine polisher. Paint correction isn’t simply about removing as many defects as possible. It’s about understanding what you’re working with, identifying the areas that can safely be corrected, and knowing when to take a more conservative approach.

With older and previously refinished vehicles especially, taking your time and working methodically is essential. The aim is always to achieve the best possible finish while safely preserving as much paint as we can — rather than chasing perfection at the expense of the paint itself.

"Ceramic coated" doesn't always mean "professionally protected."

This GTR came to me after being ceramic coated around 4 years ago, and it's a perfect example of why I would never apply a ceramic coating outdoors.

The coating was littered with high spots, patchiness and smudges that had cured into the paint. White paint is hard enough to inspect under proper studio lighting—trying to achieve a flawless coating on a driveway is asking for trouble.

A ceramic coating is only as good as the preparation and application. The product alone doesn't guarantee quality.

For this GTR, the process included:

✔️ Full decontamination wash & clay bar treatment

✔️ Rear arch PPF removal

✔️ Machine polishing throughout, with heavier correction to remove stubborn ceramic coating high spots

✔️ Panel wipe to remove all polishing oils

✔️ Professional application of a 5-year ceramic coating

There's a reason some ceramic coatings fail, look patchy, or leave customers disappointed. More often than not, it's not the coating—it's the person applying it.

This Nissan 350Z came in looking tired and left looking like it should! 😍

Safe to say this one needed some serious TLC.

The headlights had been "restored" earlier this year (not by me), but sadly they hadn't lasted, with one even being covered by a sticker to hide the damage they did.

Here's what it received:

💎 Full headlight restoration – sanded, refined and protected.
💎 Single-stage machine polish to bring the paintwork back to life.
💎 Labocosmetica Venere topped with Cupido for that glossy, protected finish.
💎 Small touch-ups where possible.
💎 Crystal-clear glass.

185k miles and still turning heads! ✨

This lovely Celica came in for a well-deserved bit of TLC, and what a transformation it was. Cars like this are always a pleasure to work on!

✅ Headlight restoration (800 grit through to 3000 grit, then coated for protection) – despite hazing and condensation inside the lenses, they came up brilliantly.

✅ Full decontamination and clay bar treatment – it definitely needed it!

✅ Hand polished to bring the paint back to life.

✅ Finished with a quality wax for that deep gloss and protection.

✅ Glass cleaned, wheels detailed, exhaust polished... the full works.

It's always nice working on a car that takes me back to where it all started.

I won't lie, it has been a an absolute nightmare with the lift and ground work. I never want to go through that ordeal again!

I would like to apologise to my better half, yes I have been a total nightmare but he stuck with me and helped me along the way! ❤️
