HOW TO SCORE ON HAZARD PERCEPTION

You click either the left or right mouse button whenever you think you can see a hazard developing. The speed at which you click the mouse button as a hazard develops will determine your score for that particular hazard clip. You can score between 0 and 5 on each hazard. There are 14 clips and 15 hazard. Therefore the maximum you can score is 75 (i.e. 15 hazards x 5). To pass you need a score of 44.

Hazard perception tips

In the test the points are given every time you click your mouse to show that you have recognised a developing hazard – the quicker you see the hazard developing, the more points you will receive. In addition to obtaining the points, you must click on a developing hazard as opposed to a potential hazard as you won’t achieve points for potential hazards.

Can I have a driving lesson before I pass my theory test?

Yes – you can take practical lessons while preparing for your theory test. In fact, taking driving lessons whilst studying for the theory test is generally beneficial to the learning process.

Any time you feel tense or feel you’ve lost your focus, or if you feel you’ve made a mistake on your test, remember to concentrate on your breathing and take a few deep breaths. This will calm your mind, stop you dwelling in the past and help you focus on the next instruction. Remember, any mistake you feel you’ve made may only be minor, in which case you can still pass your test. And don’t feel shy if you didn’t understand something. Ask your examiner to repeat any instructions you’re not sure of.

Chicanes may be used to slow traffic down

Allow cyclists and motorcyclists room to pass through them. Maintain a reduced speed along the whole of the stretch of road within the calming measures. Give way to oncoming road users if directed to do so by signs.

You should not overtake other moving road users while in these areas.

When driving up hill if you change up a gear too early before building up speed the car will struggle and could even stall.

The low gears are best when driving up a steep hill. Before you change up a gear, make sure that you accelerate first, a bit more than you would on a flat road

Traffic calming measures such as speed bumps are designed to slow traffic down and are usually used in residential or busy pedestrian areas.

Successful speed limits should be self-enforcing through both good road design and clear signs. Traffic calming measures like humps and bumps can help enforce lower speed limits
