Dacia Spring EV UK’s most affordable new car

The Dacia Spring electric is now the most affordable new car in the UK.
The five-door city car now starts from £11,990 after another price cut.
Dacia had knocked £3,750 off the enhanced Spring, equivalent to the maximum government electric car grant, bringing the Expression Electric 70 down to £12,240 and Extreme Electric 100 to £13,240.
Now it has further reduced the prices of its first electric car to £11,990 and £12,990 respectively. It makes the entry model the UK’s cheapest new car and emphasises electric cars are affordable.
Mitchells dealer principal Matt Huke-Jenner said the current Dacia Spring did not qualify for any government grant because the car and battery were not manufactured in Europe.
Owners of this city car tend to do low mileage so often choose not to have of a home wall charger fitted and top up the 24.3kWh battery using a domestic three-pin plug. It charges slower but is enough to top up if the Spring is used as a local runabout and does not do daily long-distance driving.
“You can get a top-of-the-range model for £12,990, and that is predominantly what we are selling. It is a 100hp electric car that has got all the features you would see on a top-of-the-range car,” said Matt.
The 2026 Spring has a refreshed chassis with new anti-roll bar, retuned suspension, boosted braking assistance and more powerful electric motors to improve performance, range, driving pleasure and comfort.
Expression gets a 70hp motor, Extreme a 100hp unit and both have a range of up to 140 miles. They replaced the original 45hp and 65hp motors to make the Spring better to drive on faster roads.
Spring charges from 20 to 100% in three hours 20 minutes with a 7kW home wall charger and 10 hours 11 minutes with a 2.3kW domestic three-pin socket.
The £11,990 Expression model includes air conditioning, cruise control with speed-limiter, electric front windows, rear parking sensors, rear wash-wipe, central locking, steering wheel-mounted media controls and a seven-inch digital driver display.
Extreme, just £1,000 more, adds electric rear windows, heated electric door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors with reversing camera, extra USB connectivity, vehicle-to-load versatility to plug in and power external electrical devices, a 10.1in digital multimedia display with wireless smartphone connectivity and copper-accented styling.
The compact four-seat Spring has a class-leading 308-litre boot and the rear seats fold down.
Dacia has also reduced the pricing of Duster and Bigster full hybrid SUVs to help offset rising fuel prices adding to the cost of living crisis.
Up to £1,750 has been cut from the list price of full hybrid versions, which can travel short distances on battery power alone and benefit from better fuel economy, to make them more affordable.
The price difference between full hybrid and mild hybrid models is now only £1,500 and just £10 a month on a P*P finance contract.

Dacia launching 4x4 SUVs with automatic transmission

Dacia is responding to customer demand with new versions of its Duster and Bigster SUVs.
It is now making four-wheel drive versions available with automatic transmission.
The latest models, due to be launched by autumn, feature a new hybrid 150 4x4 powertrain with a petrol engine driving the front wheels and an electric motor the rear ones.
The new generation 48-volt mild hybrid system features a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and electric vehicle driving capability.
The three-cylinder engine delivers maximum power of 150hp and 230Nm of torque.
The small, rear-mounted electric motor gives an extra 87Nm of torque and drives the rear wheels via a two-speed gearbox. First gear delivers lots of low-speed torque for off-road driving while second gear can drive the rear wheels at motorway speeds.
The responsive six-speed dual-clutch gearbox shifts automatically but has steering wheel paddles for manual shifting when drivers want more control.
Mitchells dealer principal Matt Huke-Jenner said: “There is a market for these new Duster and Bigster 4x4 models.
“We get a lot of inquiries from customers looking for a four-wheel-drive automatic. Now Dacia has listened to what customers want.”
Dacia’s rugged, robust SUVs’ versatility is boosted by the new powertrain combining electrified efficiency, all-wheel drive traction for added confidence and automatic convenience whether on the school run and commuting, muddy tracks and winter roads.
