A fantastic, confident drive by Cam this morning. He got a well deserved pass this morning with only 1 DF, only 30 hours including the test but he did gain more experience driving with his parents. Well done Cam really happy for you. Enjoy your freedom.

πŸš— Learner drivers β€” important update about swapping driving tests

The DVSA has introduced new rules around swapping driving test bookings with another learner driver.

A test swap is not the same as changing your test date. It means you and another learner exchange your existing test slots.

Key things to know:

βœ… From **12 May 2026**, only the learner can swap their own car driving test
❌ Driving instructors, websites or third parties cannot swap tests for you
πŸ“ž Swaps can only be done by phone through DVSA
πŸ” A swap counts as **1 of your 2 allowed test changes**
πŸ“… You must request the swap at least **10 full working days** before the earliest test
πŸ“ From **9 June 2026**, location rules will also apply, meaning swaps will usually need to be with someone at the same test centre, one of your 3 nearest test centres, or the test centre you originally booked at

Before agreeing to a swap, please check with your instructor first. You need to make sure you are ready for the new date and that your instructor is available for the test centre, date and time.

Also, never share personal details like your driving licence number, address, phone number, email or card details with another learner.

We’ve put together this quick guide to help make the rules easier to understand πŸ‘‡

If you are unsure, speak to your instructor before doing anything.

Swapping your test after 12th May.

You may be able to swap your car driving test with another learner driver by phone if you both already have a test booked and want each other's test slot.

Remember when your child was little and you couldn't wait to take them everywhere?
And they were excited to be seen with you?
Those days are long gone.
Now you're dropping them round the corner from where they’re meeting their friends, so they don't have to be seen arriving with you.
You're circling car parks at 10pm waiting to pick them up.
You are Dad's taxi. (Or Mum's taxi. Unlike teenagers, we don't judge.)
So you want them to learn to drive.
Here's the good news: private practice β€” taking a learner out between their lessons β€” genuinely improves their chances of passing first time.
More hours behind the wheel means more confidence, more experience, and sooner rather than later, the freedom to make their own way to the shops, their friends, wherever.
Without you.
Before you start, though, there are a few things to get right:
πŸš— Insurance β€” the learner must either be added to your policy or take out their own learner driver insurance. Check before you go anywhere. An uninsured learner driver can face an unlimited fine and up to 8 penalty points.
πŸ…» L plates (or D plates in Wales) β€” front and back, correct size, red letter on white background. Don’t forget to take them off when a full licence holder is driving.
πŸ“΅ You're in charge β€” as the supervising driver, you are legally in charge of the vehicle. That means no holding your phone. Not for calls, not for texts, not for a quick look at the map. It's illegal, and it's exactly the kind of thing you'd tell them off for.
🍺 And yes, that means staying sober too. You must be under the legal drink-drive limit. No exceptions.
To supervise a learner you need to be at least 21, have held a full licence for at least 3 years, and be qualified to drive the type of vehicle they're learning in.
For everything you need to know: gov.uk/guidance/supervise-a-learner-driver
Dad's taxi doesn't have to be forever. The sooner they pass, the sooner you get your evenings back.
But you’ll still wait up for them – you stop being a chauffeur, not a parent.
