Higashi Karate Kai has been in operation for more than 40 years and has over 1,000 students in more than 20 clubs. Higashi Karate Kai was founded by the late Peter Spanton - 8th Dan (Shihan)

Peter Spanton began karate training in the Wado-ryu style in March 1965 under Tatsuo Suzuki in the B.K.A. He was graded to Shodan in December 1966 and most recently, awarded his Hachidan in 2004

nese instructors he trained under were T. Shiomitsu, T. Takamizawa, also a little with Hayakama, Fuji and Toyama. He represented GB in international events several times in 1966/67 and has officiated in international & world events as a kumite referee and judge and kata judge, and frequently officiates at E.K.F. & E.K.C. events as Chief Kata Judge. He was a WUKO Kumite and Kata Judge for while and Chief Referee for England and has also been a member of various Executive and Technical Committees in the past. I believe he was the first English medal winner at a European event, with a bronze. His philosophy of karate-do is deep, yet simple:

A massive thank you to everyone who attended yesterday’s course and grading (Saturday, 20th June 2026) in South Woodham Ferrers, Essex!
It was an incredible turnout, and a huge thank you goes out to all the senior instructors and students who made the day so special. Training and grading in yesterday's challenging heat was no small feat, but the determination, focus, and spirit on display were absolutely outstanding. You all did amazing!
We are incredibly grateful for your continued dedication and support. Let's keep this fantastic momentum going into our next sessions! (Bracknell, July 18th Summer Course)🔥
Big congratulations to everyone who was promoted yesterday on their well-deserved new grades! Wear them with pride.

Sunday the 10th of May is our next interclub training session. I am working on formalising the Higashi syllabus across all the Irish clubs with the help of the senior grades. We intend rotating the sessions between the Belfast Higashi clubs, Sligo Higashi Karate Club and Tir Chonaill Higashi. The first will be Belfast. All interested students should attend.
