The Ledge Behind Phantom Rock

it was one of those dreamy cloudy days, the kind which only tropical deciduous areas can witness. the clouds almost seemed to wisp out of the crevices and cracks of this mighty monolithic mountain.

though late in the noon, it was breezy and fresh with petrichor heavy in the air.

the red manmade structure and the deforested plots behind it were a befitting testament to man's continuous struggle to be at par with nature. however, the mountains stood tall and mighty, far beyond our puny mortal hands could hope to grasp.

twas quite the irony, this spectacle, as i struggled to get past the technological limitations of the camera to capture this scene as i felt it. and failed.

some things are not meant for film i think, they exist in the moments we are with them. and that's what makes them special.

i think.

The Blue Kumauni Home Behind The Ridge

it stared at the black bulbul for about 15 minutes. following every move with piercing golden eyes, every jump of the bird reflecting in a twitch of the haunches, a raising of the hackles. patient, fast and agile, this cat was the perfectly honoured it's lineage from the stealthier, bigger and far more dangerous panthers and leopards in the region.

the smaller cat, he really tried tried tried, but he couldn't get anywhere and the bird flied, flied, flied.

it's fun, chasing cats chasing birds.

enough weird for today, more posts from Uttarakhand coming through soon.

The Day We Collected Firewood

Note to self:
Nothing captures them feels by the fire better than the song 'Woods' by .

A stanza of it goes something like this:
And we leave it all behind
Can't you see we need some time?!
And we all sit around the fire,
We feel a little warmer now
And we all sit around the fire,
We feel so much better now!

It was a fun day. And the fruits of our labour kept us warm through the next week of biting mountain cold.

Behind the Kitchen at Camp Purple

Roger.

there is an aura to a mountain dog, a primal air around it. everything about it is so familiar, yet so different.

patient, foreboding demeanour; a gait so lithe and sprightly their feet hardly ever rest on the ground. an almost wolfish persona bathes them. known for their endurance and fierce loyalty, these creatures are an honour to know and be around.

take this one, Roger, he is just as comfortable in snow as he is in rain, and this hound tore apart a fox only a week before this photo was taken. yet was nice enough to come and pose for us.

by a random frosty road

the himalayas ft. stormy clouds

there it was, so clearly visible and yet so far away. a spectacle you couldn't take your eyes off. the skies turned a hint of rose and fog swirled in the vale below.

there it was again, the magic of the mountains, a mysterious aura of primal powers and ethereal beauty that takes over from the peaks through to the hills.

and there i was, a mere speck, in the great scale of things, desperate to put all of it on film, all in the jiffy of a lifetime.

a moment.

shooting birds.

there is a certain peace to watching birds. fast, agile and unpredictable; these graceful sky-dwellers are as fascinating as they are rare.

endemic to the range, the Himalayan bulbul is found in the foothills, along secluded forests away from human populace.

found this pair off a ridge in Uttarakhand. the offbeat Himalayas is a symphony of bird sounds, waiting for the right watcher to behold.

one even posed, I think.

the sun bid goodbye from behind the mountain, letting it's light linger just long enough to paint the clouds pink against the azure sky.

another sunset, another year. they say time only exists when you measure it. maybe this year we live the time we have, instead of spending so much time being aware of time.

maybe this year.

You know why tents are fun?

Every morning you wake up, and you're reminded that this is not home. That this is temporary. And that's why travel is a release, an in-your-face sort of lesson about how everything is transient.

While we divide and fracture the country along lines of communal hatred and interpretations of religion, the wheel keeps spinning on.

Reminding us, all of us Indians, of how the country is defined and powered by it's diversity. The day we threaten that, the day we weaponise that diversity, is the day we effectively render India hopeless and lost.

Happy Independence Day.
