Renowned singer-songwriter, Grammy and Emmy-Award winner, Tony and Academy Award nominee, and country music legend Dolly Parton has passed away at the age of 80.
She began her career as a songwriter, which soon evolved into a career as a country music singer, composing iconic tunes such as "Jolene," "Love Is Like a Butterfly," and "I Will Always Love You." In addition to her plethora of achievements in the music industry, Parton expanded her legacy into film, starring in the 1980 feature film 9 to 5 alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.
Parton lent her immense talents to developing the music and lyrics for 9 to 5: The Musical, which debuted on Broadway in 2009 before arriving in the UK in 2012. A West End production opened in 2019. The show received 15 Drama Desk nominations (the most received by a production in a single year) and 4 Tony nominations, including Best Original Score for Parton.
In addition to the litany of artistic achievements earned in the span of her illustrious career, Parton was also a dedicated philanthropist who supported many charities and efforts through her non-profit organisation, The Dollywood Foundation.
Dolly Parton was a beacon of talent, charity, and love who enriched our music and our culture. She will be sorely missed.
