🚗 TRAINEE DRIVING INSTRUCTORS — HOW WOULD YOU HANDLE THIS? 👀

In this real ADI Part 3 training session, a trainee driving instructor teaches their trainer meeting situations, while the trainer role-plays a partly trained pupil.

The big question is… is the PDI teaching it correctly? 🤔

Are they giving the pupil the right level of responsibility? Are they managing the risks effectively? And, most importantly, what should the instructor be doing differently?

🚨 “Why has my driving instructor suddenly STOPPED helping me?!” 😳🚗

I was approaching a junction waiting for the usual prompts…

What mirrors to check.
When to signal.
When to slow down.
What to do next.

But this time… nothing. 😶

She just sat there and left me to deal with it myself.

At first I thought, “Erm… are you going to help me?!” 😂

Then I approached the junction, went through the routine, made the decisions and dealt with it completely on my own.

Afterwards, she asked me:

“Do you actually still need me to tell you what to do?”

And that’s when it clicked. 🤯

She hadn’t stopped helping me…

She was showing me that I didn’t need the help anymore. 🙌🚗

Sometimes progress isn’t your instructor teaching you something new.

Sometimes it’s them going quiet… and you realising you already know what to do. 💪

That little moment gave me a HUGE confidence boost.

A massive congratulations to Blake Palmer, who absolutely smashed his driving test this morning at Watford Test Centre! 🎉🚗

Huge credit to Blake for putting all the hard work into practice when it mattered most, and a big well done to his instructor Jay for helping him get test-ready. 👏

🚨 You DON’T start your Part 3 test on 0/51.

You start on 51/51. 👀

That means you’re not walking into the car trying to convince the examiner that you’re good enough.

Think of it differently…

The marks are already yours. Your job is to KEEP them.

Every time you identify what your pupil needs, adapt the lesson, manage risk effectively and help them learn, you’re giving the examiner fewer reasons to take those marks away.

So instead of starting your Part 3 thinking:

❌ “I need to impress this examiner.”
❌ “I need to somehow get 31 marks.”
❌ “What if I mess this up?”

Try:

💭 “I’ve got 51. Now let’s see how many I can keep.”

It’s only a change in mindset…

But if you’re sitting outside the test centre with your nerves going crazy, it might completely change how you approach those next 45 minutes.

🚗 I realised I was checking my mirrors… but I wasn’t actually LOOKING. 👀

For ages, I thought I was doing the right thing because I was checking my mirrors regularly.

But then my instructor made me realise something…

I was checking them almost out of habit — without really taking in what I could see. 😳

Now, every time I check my mirrors, I ask myself:

💭 “What is this information telling me… and what do I need to do with it?”

Is someone following closely?
Is there a cyclist beside me?
Is another car about to overtake?
Do I need to change my speed, position or decision?

That one little change has made my mirror checks feel completely different.

Don’t just CHECK your mirrors. USE them. 👀🚗

Another lesson learned on my driving journey! 🙌

I genuinely thought my driving instructor was being dramatic… 😭🚗

“STOP staring at the car in front of you.”

Erm… WHERE ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO LOOK?! 😂

But then he explained it — and suddenly it made complete sense.

👀 Look too close = you’re constantly REACTING.
🔭 Look further ahead = you can start PLANNING.

You spot hazards earlier.
You have more time to make decisions.
You brake earlier.
And driving suddenly feels SO much calmer.

Such a tiny change, but it’s genuinely made one of the biggest differences to my driving so far.

Now whenever I catch myself staring at the car ahead, I can practically hear my instructor:

“LOOK FURTHER AHEAD!” 😂

🚨 You had to grab the steering wheel on your Part 3… NOW WHAT?

First: DON’T PANIC.

Second: DON’T pretend it didn’t happen. 👀

A physical or verbal intervention is serious — but one of the BIGGEST mistakes trainee instructors make is carrying on with the lesson as if nothing happened.

The examiner isn’t only watching the intervention…

They’re watching what you do NEXT. 🎯
If appropriate, find somewhere safe to pull over and turn that moment into a learning opportunity.

💬 What did your pupil see?
🧠 What were they thinking?
❓ Why did the situation develop?
💡 What could THEY do differently next time?

Rather than immediately giving them the answer, get your pupil thinking, reflecting and finding their own solution.

That’s where you can demonstrate some of your BEST coaching skills.

An intervention doesn’t have to define your Part 3 lesson.

🍽️🚗 A KITCHEN PLATE improved my steering?!

One small tip has completely changed the way I steer… and I’ve even been practising it at home! 😂

Using a plate to practise the pull-push steering technique has helped me understand the hand movement, stay in control and make my steering feel so much smoother behind the wheel.

Sometimes it’s the simplest tricks that make the BIGGEST difference. 🙌

I’m still learning, still improving and getting closer to that licence with every lesson! 🚘✨
