1938 MG TA

The MG T series was a range of open top roadsters with very little weather protection produced in various models from 1936 to 1955 until being replaced ty the MGA. The earliest of the models, the TA, was built until 1939 with just 3003 produced.

Power of 50HP was claimed from the 1,292cc OHV 4 cylinder MPJG engine with twin SU carbs, the transmission was 4 speed with synchromesh on 3rd and 4th gears. Top speed back then was almost 80mph with a 0 – 60 time of 23 seconds, how things have changed. 

Just 4 keepers recorded in the past 40 years. Finished in gleaming black coachwork with a stunning interior with burgundy red leather, black carpets and a classy wood dashboard it’s difficult to believe the car is 82 years old

A lengthy, top quality, detailed full nut and bolt restoration was completed around 2011 and the car has now nicely settled down and is still of show quality or very usable for those sunny post lockdown days we all look forward to.   The quality of the restoration was obviously second to none with invoices on file for in excess of £38,000 which excludes the price of the car. The majority of the work was carried out by MG Guru Robin Lackford Motor Engineering of West Sussex with the leather interior and trimwork entrusted to well renowned classic restorer and specialist trimmer, Bryan Purves of East Sussex.

Along with the huge history file, there are also two additional files full of information showing the great lengths the owner took to source the correct people, parts and knowledge required to restore the car to this exceptional standard.

1955 Citroen Traction Avant (Light 15) with only 41,500 miles

“Slough Built” RHD version from 1955 with the 1911cc engine and 3-speed box.

Rare factory options such as a (still fully working) sliding steel sunroof, ally boot-scrapers fitted into the trailing edge of the front wing & shoes on the front of rear wings. 

Stunning in maroon and black with very little corrosion. (Obvious for it’s age) She is very solid underneath. The chrome is all in equally excellent condition.   

The leather interior is fantastically supple and soft with no tearing or cracking to be found. In fact, the rear seats barely look like anyone has ever sat in them. The springs and seat filling still give proper support. The carpets are aged – naturally – but have no holes or tears in them either.   Windows all work including the wind-out windscreen which never fails to raise a smile.   The wood trim is still in good condition and the gauges all work including some additional ones that aid mechanical sympathy: oil pressure. She even has a cigar lighter.

She drives exactly how she should – pulling smoothly through all 3 gears! Oil pressure and compression is as expected on all cylinders. She makes about 40-45 psi when driving and about 25 psi when idling.  

You can see that there has been thorough maintenance in the past evidenced through the fitment of items such as: copper brake pipes, contemporary flexi-hoses and bump-stops.   The previous owner had an additional electric cooling fan fitted to the radiator for those hot days when stuck in traffic.

There are no oil leaks and the engine area itself has been kept clean.

1967 Mercedes Benz 200 ‘Fintail’ in great need of some TLC

A Mercedes-Benz Fintail is a rare and elegant sight on our roads, and with a little work this car could make them just a little less rare.

This is a South African car that spent the first 49 years of its life in the Highveld before being brought to the UK in 2016. The car is very solid and is in good condition though could certainly use some mechanical and cosmetic TLC.

This is a four speed column shift manual car that is fully UK registered, but needs some work to be roadworthy. The engine could do with some tuning but we have replaced the brake master cylinder, fitted an electric fuel pump and completed and some other minor work, however the flywheel has sheared some teeth and this means that the car will not start. The car shows as having completed roughly 73,000 miles though we have no paperwork from its earlier life.

This elegant old Mercedes is fifty years old and looking for a loving new home which will appreciate what a stunning car this is.

The most pressing work needed to make the car roadworthy is the fitment of a new windscreen and a replacement exhaust, along with the aforementioned flywheel.

4. Spares & Repairs.

1953 Land Rover Series 1 86" petrol from a Deceased Estate.

This very original Land Rover has had a ground up restoration whilst retaining as much originality as possible. The BMIHT Certificate for this 1953 86" Land Rover tells us that it left the Solihull works on 5th October 1953 destined for David Rosenfield Ltd, Manchester.
 A RHD home-market car, it ended the first phase of its working life in a dismantled state, stored in a garage in Gloucestershire where it was to remain for 27 years. The previous owner decided it needed sorting so took on the dismantled project from his friend and proceeded to rebuild it over the ensuing four years. The chassis was rusty, but was carefully restored using new outriggers and necessary repairs throughout. It is the original to the car, something which is yet to be fully appreciated in Land Rover circles where new, non-original replacements are the easy way out these days.

Numerous photos on file show the extent and quality of the work, which also shows the extensive restoration of the bulkhead - from a pile of rusted panels to the completed, primed end result.

Clearly no stone was left unturned. The rolling project was displayed at a local show, where the overwhelming view from the crowd was to put the body back on the restored running gear in its original, patinated condition. The panels are pretty straight, but retain a well-worn paint finish which looks in keeping with the originality of the vehicle. A number of invoices show parts used, backed up by photos of the restoration. It has been carefully updated with an alternator and -ve earth wiring, five new tyres, a new tilt, side windows and runners, battery (2020), exhaust, brake master cylinder etc etc....

The whole project was nearing completion when its previous owner sadly passed away, his widow commissioning the completion to bring it to the condition we see today.
