DRIVING TEST ANXIETY OR STRESS! 🚗😰

What is driving test anxiety or stress, and why does it happen?

Driving test anxiety is the feeling of worry, nervousness, or fear before or during your practical driving test. Stress is the body’s natural response to pressure, challenges, or situations that we perceive as difficult, threatening, or beyond our ability to manage.

🚘 Why does driving test anxiety happen?

🔹 Fear of failing the driving test
🔹 Pressure to pass on the first attempt
🔹 Worry about making mistakes
🔹 Fear of the examiner’s judgement
🔹 Lack of confidence in your driving ability
🔹 Pressure from family, friends, or yourself

Stress can affect how you think, feel, and behave, as well as how your body responds physically. You might experience a racing heartbeat, sweaty hands, difficulty concentrating, or overthinking while driving.

💡 Remember: Feeling nervous before your driving test is normal. Understanding what causes your anxiety is the first step towards managing it and becoming a calmer, more confident driver. 🚗💪

🚗💡 DRIVING TEST TIP: Understanding Flashing Headlights

One of the reasons learners may fail their UK driving test is misunderstanding the meaning of flashing headlights from other road users.

📖 Highway Code Rule 110 states: “Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.”

⚠️ Never assume that a driver flashing their headlights is giving you permission to proceed, inviting you to pull out, or telling you to go. You must make your own observations, assess the situation and ensure it is safe before moving.

✅ Remember: Flashing headlights do not replace your observations or give you priority. Make safe decisions based on the road conditions and the actions of other road users.

🚘 Drive safely, think independently, and be test-ready!

How many times can you adjust a parking manoeuvre during your UK driving test?

There is no set limit on how many times you can adjust or correct a parking manoeuvre during the UK practical driving test. 🚗💨 You can make adjustments as necessary to complete the manoeuvre safely, provided you maintain good observation, proper control and do not create danger or inconvenience to other road users. Making an adjustment does not automatically mean you have failed. However, repeated or unnecessary corrections could result in a driving fault if they show poor control or observation. The priority is to take your time, check all around the vehicle and complete the manoeuvre safely and under control.

When approaching a roundabout, slow down early and choose the correct lane by following the road signs, lane markings and arrows. Check your mirrors, look carefully to the right, and give way to traffic that has priority. Don’t rely solely on another driver’s signal—make sure it is safe before you proceed. Maintain a safe speed, stay in your lane and be aware of cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users.

As you approach your exit, plan ahead and check your mirrors. Signal left at the appropriate time to show that you are leaving the roundabout, while continuing to maintain good observation and lane discipline. If you miss your exit, don’t panic or make a sudden manoeuvre—continue around the roundabout and take the next opportunity safely. Good roundabout driving is about observation, planning, positioning, speed and safe decision-making.

When should or must you give way to pedestrians?
- As a driver, you should be
prepared to give way whenever pedestrians are crossing or waiting to cross the road, particularly at junctions, pedestrian crossings, and when turning into or out of a road. At zebra crossings, you must give way to pedestrians on the crossing, and you should give way to anyone waiting to cross at a zebra crossing. At junctions, the Highway Code also says you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross the road you are turning into or out of. Always reduce your speed, check carefully, and be prepared to stop-pedestrian safety should come first.
