SUPERVISING A LEARNER DRIVER IS MORE THAN JUST SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT

I think many people underestimate what it means to supervise a learner driver.

You are not there to scroll through social media.

You are not there to reply to emails.

You are not there to answer messages, watch videos or post reels.

YOU ARE PART OF THE DRIVING LESSON.

A learner driver is still learning. They are developing skills, judgement and experience. They need another pair of eyes looking ahead, spotting hazards, helping them plan and keeping them safe.

If your head is buried in your phone, you cannot do that.

The law requires a supervising driver to be over 21 and to have held a full UK licence for at least three years. What many people forget is that supervision is an active role, not a passive one.

STAY OFF YOUR PHONE.

Watch the road.

Watch what is happening around the vehicle.

Help your learner build good habits, not bad ones.

Private practice can be one of the best ways for a learner to gain experience between lessons, but only if the person supervising takes the responsibility seriously.

Remember, if something goes wrong, saying “I was only the passenger” will not change the fact that you were the supervisor.

If you can’t handle the heat leave it to the professionals 🙏🏾

If you supervise a learner driver, what advice would you give to someone doing it for the first time?

🚗 LET’S Learn Together

Learning to drive isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about growing in confidence, developing good habits, and learning from every experience behind the wheel.

That’s whyI’ve developed a simple approach to follow called LET’S:

🔹 Learn – What are we focusing on today?

🔹 Explore – What are you noticing? What options do you have?

🔹 Try – Let’s put your ideas into practice and see what happens.

🔹 Share – What have you learned? What went well? What would you do differently next time?

The best driving lessons aren’t about an instructor doing all the talking 🤷🏼‍♂️

They’re about instructor and learner working together, asking questions, reflecting on experiences, and building the skills needed for a lifetime of safe driving.

Mistakes aren’t failures.

They’re opportunities to learn.⭐️

So next time you’re out driving, remember:

LET’S
Learn • Explore • Try • Share

Because every journey is a chance to learn something new.

🚗 A Message For Parents

Learning to drive is about much more than passing a test.

It’s about helping a young person become a safe, responsible and confident driver for life.

As a driving instructor, I don’t just support learners—I support parents too.

If you’re unsure about:
• When your learner is ready for private practice
• Which roads to use
• How much practice is enough
• How to give feedback constructively
• What to expect as the test approaches

Please reach out.

I’m happy to answer questions and help you feel more confident in your role as a supervising driver.

Together we can help your learner gain valuable experience and enjoy the journey towards independence.

Message me if I can help.

Before You Start Private Practice…

🚗 5 things every parent should discuss before heading out for private practice.

Before turning the key, take 5 minutes to agree on:

1️⃣ What are we practising today?

2️⃣ Which routes will we use?

3️⃣ How will we communicate if things go wrong?

4️⃣ What support does the learner want from me?

5️⃣ What will success look like today?

Success doesn’t have to mean a perfect drive.

Sometimes success is:
✔ Staying calm
✔ Managing a difficult junction
✔ Making safe decisions
✔ Building confidence

The best practice sessions aren’t always the longest.

They’re the ones where both parent and learner finish feeling positive and ready for the next drive.

What skill is your learner currently working on?

🚗 Parents of Learner Drivers…

Are you wondering:

❓ How much private practice should my son or daughter be doing?
❓ What should we practise between lessons?
❓ How do I avoid arguments in the car?
❓ How can I help build confidence without confusing them?

These are some of the most common questions I hear from parents.

The good news is that you don’t need to be a driving instructor to make a huge difference to your learner’s progress.

If you have questions about private practice, lesson planning, test preparation, confidence, or supporting your learner, send me a message.

I’m always happy to point families in the right direction.

Every confident driver starts with good support.

Driving Lessons Are Just the Beginning

🚗 Your child’s driving lessons are only part of the journey.

Many parents assume that once lessons start, the instructor does all the work. In reality, the biggest influence on a new driver’s development is often what happens between lessons.

Private practice can help learners:
✅ Build confidence
✅ Gain experience in different conditions
✅ Reinforce skills learned with their instructor
✅ Progress more quickly

But the quality of that practice matters.

Instead of focusing on mistakes, try asking:

👉 “What went well on that drive?”
👉 “What did you learn today?”
👉 “What would you do differently next time?”

These simple questions encourage reflection and help your learner develop the thinking skills they’ll need when driving independently.

Remember, you’re not trying to be the instructor.

You’re helping them become a safe, confident driver.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced while supervising private practice?
