🚙 Happy International Driving Instructor Day! 🚗

A massive shout out to all my fellow driving instructors today… for all those who sit in the passenger seat! 😆

Did you know 16th March marks the anniversary of the very first driving test passed in the UK back in 1935? And here we are nearly 90 years later still saying…

👉 “Check your mirrors!”
👉 “Clutch down!”
👉 “You can go now… you can go… you CAN go…!”

Driving instructors truly deserve a medal for:

🏅 Smiling calmly while secretly reaching for the dual controls
🏅 Surviving the learner who treats the accelerator like an on/off switch
🏅 Keeping a straight face when someone asks “Which one is the brake again?”
🏅 Perfecting the art of the silent instructor gasp 😅

But in all seriousness…

Every day we help nervous learners turn into confident drivers and play a huge role in making the roads safer for everyone. That takes patience, skill and the ability to stay calm when someone indicates left and turns right!

So today we celebrate the people who spend their working day saying
“Left , no the other left’’ more times than they can count.

We've launched a new Road Safety Strategy, aiming to cut deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads by 65% by 2035.

Key points include:
- tougher action on drink driving
- minimum learning periods for learner drivers
- mandatory eye tests for older drivers

We're committed to doing what it takes to save thousands of lives and ease pressure on the NHS.

Our new Road Safety Strategy is a major step towards safer roads and stronger communities.

Warning lights on the dashboard alert the driver to potential problems in the car.
They help you detect issues early, whether electrical, mechanical, or safety-related.

🧩 Common Warning Lights:

1️⃣ Oil Pressure Warning

Low oil pressure → engine damage risk

Action: Stop and check oil level

2️⃣ Battery / Charging Warning

Problem with battery or alternator

Action: Check battery and connections

3️⃣ Brake Warning

Weak brakes or ABS issue

Action: Check brake fluid and handbrake

4️⃣ Check Engine Light

Engine or sensor issue

Action: Use OBD-II scanner to diagnose

5️⃣ Engine Temperature

Engine overheating

Action: Stop immediately and let it cool

⚡ Tips When Warning Lights Appear:

Never ignore any warning light

Check your owner’s manual for details

Upcoming changes to The Practical Driving Test

We’re making some subtle but meaningful changes to the practical driving test. 🚗

You may have seen that we have been trialling changes to the driving test at 20 driving test centres.

As part of the trial, learners drove on routes containing more high-speed, rural roads during their driving test, where location allowed. Now, we are rolling out the changes to all driving test centres in Great Britain from 24 November 2025.

As well as increasing the amount of time spent on higher-speed roads, we are:

✅ reducing the number of stops during the test from 4 to 3
✅ lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7
✅ adding flexibility to the independent driving segment, allowing it to run for the full duration of the test

These changes are designed to help improve road safety by better replicating the conditions motorists face in the real world. They won’t affect the skills needed to take a driving test.
