On Saturday we hosted our Halewood Proud Creators’ Day! This was an unforgettable event which saw more than 5,000 colleagues and their loved ones celebrate a milestone anniversary for JLR Halewood, as 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the manufacturing plant.

There were lots of smiles and children laughing as we came together in unity - as one extended Halewood family - to enjoy all the amazing activities on offer. This included technology tours, live entertainment, a line-up of past and present car models, mascots, fairground refreshments and much, much more.

It is a day we won’t forget for a very long time which is brought to life in this fantastic highlights video and attached pictures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNbMVx8r0mo

Not all superheroes wear capes… something which could be said about JLR Halewood’s Business Protection (BP) team.

A few weeks ago, Jack Curran, Colin Weaver, Marco Grindley and David Reynold – who all work for BP - helped save the life of an employee who collapsed at work and suffered a cardiac arrest.

When the team got to the scene, the employee was receiving CPR from their teammates. Using a defibrillator, Jack and Colin were able to bring the employee’s heartbeat back to a stable rhythm again.

In a true unified team effort, David worked with NHS Response to get a doctor on to the site and within 18 minutes, an air ambulance helicopter landed in one of our car parks.

BP Supervisor, Mike Madigan, said: “I’m so proud of the team. The chances of surviving after receiving three shocks from a defibrillator drops to 1 in 20. This patient had five, so the fact that they were able to bring them back to consciousness, is nothing short of a miracle. We are all so glad to hear that the employee is doing well and wish them a speedy recovery.”

We can also reveal that the first all-electric car built at JLR Halewood will be from the Range Rover family and will launch in 2025. Here’s to a bright, exciting, electrified future!

Recycling heroes’ was a key theme of Global Recycling Day last Saturday (18 March) which is why we would like to give a special shout out to some of our own ‘recycling heroes’ from Halewood, including Phil Cotterill, George Johnson, Graham Fearn, Neil Ging and Jordan Crawford-Roberts – who all work in our Paint Shop Maintenance team.

Earlier this year, several large motor control panels were being removed as part of a refurbishment of the pre-treatment and e-coat departments in our Paint Shop. Rather than sending the panels straight to the scrapyard, the team took it upon themselves to strip them down, so they could be recycled more sustainably.

Sustainability sits at the core of our Reimagine strategy and as a business we aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions across our supply chain, products and operations by 2039, with the electrification of our vehicles being a key element of this.

Just as our recycling heroes have done here, we also need to ensure we actively recycle and reuse our waste and materials wherever we can - in this way we will have a positive societal impact, preserve natural resources and also reduce waste in our supply chain. Great job team!

As it’s Valentine’s Day, we are feeling the love today and wanted to share some incredible news with you…. Jaguar Land Rover will be donating a brand-new Discovery Sport to local charity, the Inclusive Hub, which has been chosen as our Halewood Motorvate charity car winner.

Motorvate is an employee programme which rewards good attendance. If Jaguar Land Rover hits its attendance targets each quarter, Motorvate benefits are triggered, and all employees can apply for funding or a car for a charity or local organisation which is close to their hearts.

Based in Kirkdale, the Inclusive Hub aims to empower people of all ages and abilities through education and exercise.

Liam Starkey (pictured on the right) coach and director at the Inclusive Hub, said: “The donation of this car is life-changing for us as it will allow us to us to extend our provision and introduce new people to what we do. For instance, there are people that can’t get to us because their parents or carers don’t drive, or they may work during the week and so can only bring them at the weekends. That will all change now – because of the car from Halewood.”

Liam added: “We also have a women’s group at the hub that does a lot of community outreach work with schools, teaching them about the traits of autism. It will open up so many doors for us and we want to thank everyone at Jaguar Land Rover Halewood for this generous donation.”

Danny Murray (pictured on the left) who works in Body Construction and nominated the Inclusive Hub for the Motorvate charity car draw, said: “I’ve known Liam since school but wasn’t aware of the hub until a mutual friend of ours told me about it, as I myself was keen to look for ways to integrate my own children into sport.

“My eldest child has ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and my middle child has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and I have noticed such a huge difference since they started going to the hub.

“They are so much more outgoing and confident through learning to do boxing and sports there. It’s also been brilliant for us as a family, as it’s given us all a routine every Saturday and Sunday and we also get to talk to other parents who are in a similar position to us.”
Danny added: “I couldn’t think of a more deserving charity than the Inclusive Hub and it makes me proud that through programmes like Motorvate, we can have such a positive impact on our local communities.” The Inclusive Hub

During we wanted to remind you that the application window for our Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship programme is now open.

Halewood’s Hannah Cocklin (pictured), who is now a toolmaker and die maintenance engineer, is a former Level 3 Advanced apprentice. Hannah tells us why choosing to enrol on this four-year programme was the best decision she ever made.

Hannah said: “Choosing to do an apprenticeship with JLR has changed my life as it’s given me a new set of skills and at 26, I am doing a job I really enjoy and feel like I am progressing.

“I also think there is a big advantage in doing an apprenticeship as you are getting paid on the job, whereas if I had gone to university, which I had considered, I would have had to juggle studying alongside doing a part-time job to fund my education.”

Hannah added: “As well as the actual work, I’ve enjoyed the networking part of the programme and meeting new people - this has given me new opportunities across the business. I’ve been able to work on 3D scanning projects which is my favourite thing to do here.”

Asked what advice she would give other people who are considering applying for the Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship programme, Hannah said: “The main thing is to remember is that you don’t need any experience to apply – I didn’t, so don’t let that hold you back. The team are looking for people with a drive and determination to succeed. You learn and experience new things as you progress through the programme.”

We are currently recruiting for the next intake of apprentices who will start in Halewood in September 2023. Halewood employee, James Wynn, is dedicated to raising awareness of su***de following the loss of his dad when he was only 14 years old. As today is in the UK, James has bravely shared his moving story with us.

This is James’ story, in his own words:

“I’m 46 years of age and I’ve lived nearly 32 years without my dad. To lose a parent at any time in your life is difficult. But to lose your dad in your early teens to su***de will turn your world upside down.

“It was like a tornado - a force 10 hurricane tearing up my emotions and what I understood life was about, and then scattering them into the wind. It was a huge effort to find and pick the pieces up that was left behind and, the first few attempts, I failed.

“There will always be a small part of me that remains the 14-year-old boy listening to my mum telling me what my dad had decided to do.

“My dad was Jimmy Wynn, my hero, the one to teach me about life, my go-to person. Most of you have stood at the bar with your dad as an adult, I never have. I would try to stop the earth from turning, if succeeding meant I could have a few pints with him. Just a couple of hours to stand at the bar as men, as fathers, dad and lad, but most importantly, as friends.

“I didn’t even get the opportunity to win one of our spectacular play fights. His record still stands at 1,359 wins, 0 losses. He did always tell me I’d never be big enough to beat him, and even if I got big enough, I’d be too old.

“He was average in height but a giant in character. Warm, tough, funny, a friend to many, resilient and fearless – and I’ve heard the stories to prove it.

“To quote him: ‘I’m Jimmy Wynn, I don’t go to people for help, people come to me.’ But maybe that was his flaw, his Achilles’ heel.

“He had a dark side that was different to the public perception of all these things he was. No one could see it coming; whatever forced his hand. All he had to do was reach out, but something stopped him. This, for me brings his sadness into it; the side no one really knew or understood.

“The years without him have brought every emotion and feeling you could imagine. As you get older, you think differently, you gain the ability to put things into perspective. So, the feelings of loneliness, anger, even hatred for him and the situation I found myself in, at times, turned to his loneliness.

“He must have been extremely lonely to decide that this was his only option, that he’d had enough? Or was it that he’d had enough? Did he think we’d be better off without him? Was it guilt that forced him to do it? Was it something I’d done, even hadn’t done? The questions are endless. All of them are unanswerable.

“My point is that, neither I, nor anyone else will never know why or when he’d decided or how he decided. One thing that I do know, or I’m pretty certain of, is that he must not have known the devastation he would cause.

“It wasn’t about what anyone had specifically done, it’s about how he felt, no one forced him, he wanted to. It’s an illness, and su***de was his cure.

“It is one of the harshest lessons life will teach you, nothing could ever prepare you for it. The only thing that’s made it bearable is time. On the same hand though, time does not stop me missing him, loving him or wanting to share the things that a father and son should.

“I’m not saying it doesn’t hurt now because it does. I found a strength to deal with it. I now understand and accept his decision. But it's taken a long time.’

Time to Talk Day is a day dedicated to creating supportive communities by having conversations with family, friends and colleagues about mental health. We all have mental health, by talking about it we can support ourselves and others, just as James has done.

Kung Hei Fat Choi (gōng xǐ fā cái). Yesterday marked the start of Lunar New Year – the Year of the Rabbit - and to celebrate, the Halewood Inclusion Council has dressed areas across our factory in traditional Chinese decoration, and also has some surprises up its sleeves for our employees this week.

In line with Chinese tradition, they are running a Red Envelope Appeal and collecting monetary donations from our kind-hearted employees for the Chinese Wellbeing society. This is a local charity which works to promote and improve the wellbeing of older people in Liverpool’s Chinese community, helping them to live independently in their homes as long as possible.

The custom of handing out red envelopes during Lunar New Year (also known as Chinese New Year) is a way of sending good luck wishes and Chinese people regard the colour red as a symbol of happiness and good fortune.

On Thursday, the Inclusion Council will also be setting up a Lunar New Year celebration stand inside our Trim and Final department. There will be lots of activities where our employees can find out more about their zodiac animal, receive fortunes for 2023 as well as learn to write name in Chinese. There will also be given small chocolate rabbit treats in celebration of it being the Year of the Rabbit.

As we begin a new year, we’d like to reflect on some of the progress we have made at Halewood on our Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) journey over the last 12 months.

This has included the installation of gender-neutral toilets and changing facilities across the site, expressing rooms for new parents, and lockers which provide access to free sanitary wear in all our female toilets, as well as building a new Quiet Room for reflection and prayer.

In addition to these physical changes, we are also proud of the cultural journey we embarked upon as a workforce last year, recognising key celebrations such as Hannukah, Easter, Holi, Manchester Pride, Black History Month, Diwali, Hannukah and Christmas, to name a few.

It’s hard to pick out a single D&I highlight from 2022 but one which stands out for many of our employees is when our colleagues from Trim and Final demonstrated true unity in the workplace by painting a shopfloor pedestrian crossing in the rainbow colours of the Pride flag. They chose that specific crossing because it was shaped in an L, which could represent ‘love’. Due to the popularity of the project, there are now plans in place to create more Pride pedestrian crossings around the factory over the coming months.

We have lots more initiatives planned for 2023 to create more inclusive workspaces for our people - the heart of our business – and we look forward to sharing these with you.
