URGENT !!!

I'm hoping someone will be able to help. If you are booked for the track day at Mallory this Saturday, 12th, and can't make it I would happily buy your place. I have a bike that needs testing there before the meeting the following weekend. Please PM me if you can help.

I would appreciate everyone sharing this post if you can. Thank you.

We have opened a new page dedicated to the riders we will be helping this year. It will introduce you to them, give you a little background on them and show the progress over the course of the season. Please like and share the page to show your support for these riders as they embark on their journey to fulfill their dreams.

We started talking a while ago about springs being a modest cost upgrade for your bike and discussed the difference between linear and progressive. We also mentioned we would instruct you on the way to work out "sag" which effectively calculates the "weight" of spring that would best suit your bike/rider combination. Before we do that we would like to explain why sag and the right weight spring are so important.

The suspension on your bike is there for one reason only and it's not to make your ride more comfortable. It is there to control the transfer of weight.

Think about this for a minute. Under acceleration the bike "squats" in the rear and raises the front so the weight is transferred to the rear pushing the tyre into the road. The reverse happens under braking. When accelerating if the rear is to soft it squats more, lightening the front and causing wheelstands. Coming off a corner this effect will cause the bike to run wide. If the rear is too hard it will lose traction and cause sliding off corners. Both scenarios mean having to shut the throttle thereby losing forward momentum. We will discuss these topics at length in later posts, for now, simply be aware that controlling the transfer of weight on your bike is the single thing that will improve the handling and is why the correct spring weight is vital.

Please also be aware that the valving (for the oil) only controls the speed of movement the spring compresses or decompresses. The springs themselves are what keeps the bike at the right height.

In our next post we will explain how to measure your sag and choose the correct spring weight. We will also supply some guidelines for working with sag.

Happy riding.

I'd like to thank you all for sticking with us through what has been a trying time on the family front. It's time now to kickstart 2016 and get on with the job at hand.

Due to problems with council approval we still find ourselves without premises but this should be rectified soon. Meanwhile we will continue to honour our customers by continuing to work from home.

2016 will also see us provide some clinics for those interested. These will cover suspension setup, general maintainance and possibly engine building/tuning should there be demand. This page will continue to share information and we are here to answer any questions or enquiries you may have.

Stay safe and stay upright :-)

The best and cheapest upgrade you can make for your suspension is the fitment of linear rate springs for both forks and shock.

Standard springs are predominantly progressive rate to overcome the additional weight of pillions or loads. Occasionally you will find linear rate springs fitted by the manufacturer however there is no guarantee they are suited to your weight.

If you are on a budget, the fitment of linear rate springs matched to your weight will transform the bike. Then later, when the budget allows, you can have the forks and shock re-valved and not have the cost of springs at the same time.

The difference between the two types of springs are, linear stays at a constant rate as it is compressed while progressive increases the rate the more it is compressed.

An interesting note for forks -
As forks have air trapped inside them they can never truly be called linear no matter what spring you fit, the reason is the air. Air increases in pressure as it is compressed therefore there will always be a certain amount of progression in fork movement.

In our next post we will show you how to measure the bike and select the correct weight springs for you to personalise your suspension.

*** Where To Begin ***

The obvious answer to "where do we begin?" is with a plan. Know what you want from your bike or what you are building it for - fast road bike, track day bike, race bike. Make this decision before you start buying or modifying anything, it will save you a lot of money in the long term.

If you intend going faster and pushing the limits, suspension and brake upgrades should be on the top of your list before you consider looking for more power. The fitment of the correct weight springs will transform your bike and braided brake lines will help with stopping. From there you can revalve or replace forks or shocks, your budget will depict how far you can go but be forewarned, there's no point having more power if the chassis and brakes can't keep it on the road.

Once you start looking for more power you must find ways of making the engine "breath" more efficiently so the intake, exhaust and fueling system should be the first things looked at. The order I strongly suggest in this area is 1 - A module to alter fueling, 2 - Air filter, 3 - Exhaust. I will explain the reasons for this in future posts.

For now, decide what you want to achieve from enhancing your bike and look at what you already have available on your model.

Here's a little slideshow I put together when I worked for MSS Kawasaki showing the build of Dean Harrisons Superstock 1000 bike. There are a few shots at the end which show Sandra Stammova and Leon Hunt in action, 2 of the riders I worked closely with during that period. Enjoy.

Every week we will supply information on how to turn your street going machine into a wild beast and then tame it. Although our information is primarily for 4 cylinder machines the information can be used with any 4 stroke motorcycle. We will cover performance upgrades, both engine and chassis, and will give tips on setting up your suspension to suit your riding. Anyone owning a sports bike will gain valuable insights by following our posts. We are also happy to answer any questions you may have. We hope you enjoy the journey

For some time we have been operating a page to share information about all facets of motorcycle enhancements and have now acquired ownership of another page, The Balance Of Power. We will no longer be posting on either of these pages however we have chosen to share the information and much more right here. So if you want to build an engine, setup your suspension or learn the basics of mechanics please watch for our future posts, tutorials and info booklets.
