MERCEDES-BENZ Wants to Use BMW Engines
Mercedes-Benz is close to a deal with BMW to start using BMW’s four-cylinder petrol engines from 2027.
The agreement would likely involve BMW’s 2.0L turbocharged B48 engine, which is already proven and can be adapted for plug-in hybrids and range-extender setups.
Mercedes is turning to BMW because its own new M252 engine, made in China, isn’t suitable for these roles and also faces U.S. tariff issues.
Cars expected to use BMW engines include the CLA, GLA, GLB, C-Class, E-Class, GLC, and the upcoming compact “Little G” off-roader.
Production would take place at BMW’s Steyr plant in Austria, with a possible U.S. factory later to avoid import tariffs.
For Mercedes, the partnership would lower R&D costs, help meet Euro 7 emissions rules, and expand its hybrid range.
For BMW, it means higher production volumes, extra revenue, and the prestige of supplying engines to its rival.
Talks are said to be at an advanced stage, with an official announcement expected by late 2025.
This would certainly see us with ALOT more work to do
