Your steering should feel smooth, precise and predictable, anything else is a warning sign 👇

If your steering feels heavy, stiff, loose or starts knocking, it’s usually a sign something isn’t right. That could be anything from worn suspension components and steering joints to low power steering fluid or alignment issues.

Common signs to watch for:
👉Steering feels heavier than usual
👉Knocking or clunking when turning
👉Car pulling to one side
👉Vibration through the steering wheel
👉Steering not returning to centre properly

These aren’t just comfort issues, they directly affect your control and safety on the road.

The good news? Most steering problems can be picked up early and sorted before they turn into something more serious (and expensive).

If something doesn’t feel right, trust it.

If your timing belt snaps, it’s not a small problem… it’s usually engine-ending.

The timing belt keeps everything in sync inside your engine - pistons, valves, camshaft - all working in perfect timing.
When it fails, that timing is lost instantly, and in most cases, components collide at high speed.

➡️ Bent valves
➡️ Damaged pistons
➡️ Potential full engine failure

It’s one of the most expensive avoidable repairs on a car.

Prevention is everything
Most manufacturers recommend replacing the timing belt every 5 years or around 60,000 miles (always worth checking your specific vehicle).

The problem?
A lot of cars show no warning signs before failure.

If you’re not sure when yours was last changed, it’s worth checking before it becomes a much bigger issue.

Engine oil is the one thing your car simply can’t run without and it’s doing more work than most people realise 👇

Inside your engine are thousands of moving components and hundreds of metal-on-metal contact points. Oil is what keeps everything lubricated, cool and protected from wear.

But here’s the key part…

👉 Oil level matters just as much as oil quality
Even being 1 litre low can significantly increase friction and heat inside the engine, leading to accelerated wear over time.

👉 Low oil doesn’t always trigger a warning straight away
By the time a light comes on, damage may already be happening.

👉 Short trips and modern driving conditions
These can cause oil to degrade faster than you think, especially if the engine isn’t getting fully up to temperature regularly.

A quick oil check takes minutes but can save you from a very expensive problem down the line.

Got run-flat tyres? Here’s what most drivers aren’t told 👇

Run-flats are designed to keep you moving after a puncture, using reinforced sidewalls to support the car even with little or no air pressure.

Sounds ideal… but there are a few important limitations.

➡️ They’re only a temporary solution
After a puncture, you’re typically limited to around 50 miles at up to 50mph. They’re designed to get you to a garage safel, not to carry on as normal.

➡️ Damage isn’t always visible
Even if the tyre looks fine externally, driving on it while deflated can weaken the internal structure.

➡️ Repairs are often not recommended
Many manufacturers advise replacing run-flats after they’ve been driven on flat, as internal damage can’t always be assessed.

➡️ You rely on your TPMS
Because they don’t visibly deflate like standard tyres, your tyre pressure monitoring system is essential to alert you to a problem.

If you’ve got run-flats and aren’t sure what your options are when it comes to replacement, we’re happy to advise.

Planning a summer road trip? Make sure your brakes are ready for it

Long journeys, heavier loads and stop-start traffic all put extra strain on your braking system. If your brakes are worn or not performing as they should, it can seriously impact your stopping distance and overall safety.

A quick brake inspection can give you peace of mind before you hit the road. We’ll check your pads, discs, and overall braking performance to make sure everything’s working exactly as it should.

Don’t leave it to chance before those summer miles.

That dashboard warning light isn’t there for decoration ⚠️

Modern cars are packed with technology, with many vehicles now using over 200 sensors to monitor everything from engine performance and emissions to braking and safety systems.

The problem is, a warning light doesn’t always tell you exactly what’s wrong, it just tells you the car has detected an issue.

That’s where proper diagnostics come in.

At Lifton Automotive Services, we use modern diagnostic equipment to read fault codes, investigate the cause properly and explain clearly what’s going on, without the confusing jargon 👍

Ignoring warning lights can often turn a small issue into a much bigger repair bill, so if something’s appeared on your dashboard, it’s worth getting checked.

Quick question… do you actually know what’s under the boot floor of your car?

A lot of modern cars no longer come with a proper spare wheel.

In fact, around 1 in 3 new cars sold in the UK now comes without a spare tyre at all.

That’s why it’s worth checking before you actually need it on the side of the road in the rain

Not sure what your car has? Pop in and we’ll happily check and advise on your options

If your air con “feels alright” rather than properly cold… it’s probably time for a re-gas

Most air conditioning systems naturally lose refrigerant over time, often up to 10% per year, even if the system is rarely used.

That gradual loss means:
• Poor cooling performance
• Longer time to chill the cabin
• Extra strain on the system
• Reduced efficiency and fuel economy

With warmer weather on the way, now’s the ideal time to get it checked before the summer rush hits ☀️

Book your air con re-gas with Lifton Automotive Services today

As temperatures rise, so do your tyre pressures

Most drivers only think about tyres losing pressure in colder weather but warmer temperatures can increase tyre pressure too.

In fact, for roughly every 10°C increase in temperature, tyre pressure can rise by around 1 PSI.

That might not sound like much, but overinflated tyres can lead to:
• Reduced grip
• Uneven tyre wear
• Harsher ride quality
• Increased risk of damage in hot conditions

If you haven’t checked your tyre pressures in a while, book in and we’ll do a free tyre pressure check for you 👍

A quick check can improve safety, handling and tyre life.
