🔧 Another successful “suicide bolt” removal!

Replacing the upper suspension arms on an Audi can sometimes turn into a much bigger job than expected.

The upper pinch bolt is well known for seizing solid in the suspension leg. When this happens, the bolt can twist and snap during removal, resulting in considerably more labour and, in severe cases, even requiring replacement of the suspension leg.

We take our time and use the correct methods to give us the best possible chance of removing these bolts successfully — and so far, we’re proud to have a 100% success rate. 💪

This Audi A5 came into the workshop with a damaged O/S/F inner driveshaft gaiter.

The vehicle had recently visited a body shop where repair work had been carried out in this area. On inspection, we found that a protective shield had not been refitted correctly. Unfortunately, it had fallen onto the driveshaft gaiter and caused it to tear.

Mistakes can happen, but this was certainly not the standard of workmanship you would expect following a professional repair.

We’ve explained our findings to the customer, provided a price to replace the damaged gaiter, and the vehicle is now booked back in with us later this month to have the repair completed correctly.

Today we had a Audi Q7 in for a wiring fault where the wiring for the Ad-blue was hanging down and rubbing on the rear axle arm. We had to carry out a repair and re-secure the the wiring back to its former place.

Another busy start to the week here at Chapmans Audi Specialist, with plenty of diagnostic work to get through.

Vehicle diagnostics aren’t always straightforward, and what initially appears to be a simple fault can quickly escalate into something much more complex.

Wherever possible, we use ODIS – the same diagnostic software used by the Audi main dealer network – along with Guided Fault Finding and manufacturer test plans. However, diagnostics are not simply about following what the computer tells you. If we believe ODIS is taking us down the wrong path, we use our experience, knowledge and further testing to investigate the fault properly.

Technology is an invaluable tool, but sometimes there’s no substitute for an experienced technician!

Sorry we haven’t posted for a couple of days – it’s been absolutely manic here at Chapmans! We’re currently receiving a large amount of diagnostic work, keeping our technicians very busy.

This screenshot was taken while we were diagnosing a charging system fault on a hybrid Audi A7.

There were quite a few ODIS test plans and checks to work through to correctly diagnose the fault. With modern hybrid vehicles, it’s important to follow the correct diagnostic process rather than simply replacing parts based on fault codes.

There is also a lot of information regarding the starter-generator potentially being covered by an Audi extended warranty, so we’re investigating this further for the customer.

We’ll let you know how we get on!

This Audi Q7 came into the workshop with a suspension fault and no functioning air suspension.

We carried out a full diagnostic scan and found numerous fault codes stored within the chassis control module.

After identifying a relevant Audi TPi (Technical Product Information), we followed the specified diagnostic test procedure and confirmed that the TPi was applicable to this vehicle.

Further testing of the air suspension system established that the chassis control compressor was no longer producing sufficient pressure, meaning it was unable to operate the suspension correctly.

A replacement compressor is now required to rectify the fault and get the Q7's air suspension working as it should.

At Chapmans Audi Specialist, we don't simply replace parts based on fault codes — we use ODIS diagnostics, manufacturer technical information and guided testing to correctly identify the cause of the problem.

We especially love the Audi Virtual Cockpit. It looks fantastic, although we can imagine it won't be a cheap part to replace if anything ever goes wrong… so definitely don't spill your coffee over it! ☕😂
