As ever I'm out on the road again today and the first of the day is what I think to be an ex Metro Challenge car, followed by a good old MG Midget 1500...described as having been stood for some time. (wiki pic used of an early MG Metro)

Tomorrow I've got a GT6 on HS6 SU's and a Lotus Excel to sort...

A very interesting exchange of messages with a much discussed maker of ignition parts, recently.

When I asked them what the mechanical advance curve is within their distributor as advertised, they just said....set at 8 to 10 static and it will be fine.

So I explained, yes that will be fine for starting, ticking over at idle and not doing it's self any harm whilst at minimal load. However, what about 2k, 3k, 4krpm when under load and the ignition timing is actually far more critical than that at idle because at these rpms the engine is under load and has a full fuelling charge in the cylinders..

Very reluctant to give me any detail....and stated that they don't hand out that kind of information. (The most very basic of info was provided).

Well if you ask for that type of info from H&H Ignition Solutions or The Distributor Doctor, they will tell you exactly what the mechanical ignition advance curve is, and they often attach a graph to the side of their box or accompanying paper work. (Image attached 123 ignition curves for the classic mini)
