Were you aware that out of the 252 part worn retailers investigated by TyreSafe and Trading Standards across Britain, an astonishing 94% were selling tyres illegally? Also, as part worn tyres are not required to be examined by x-ray for internal structure defects prior to their sale, it can be impossible to determine if any internal damage exists and the safety of the tyre has been compromised.

The financial pressures caused by COVID-19 may lead some drivers to buy part worn tyres in the belief that they offer better value for money, but this isn’t necessarily so as they need to consider the cost per mm of useable tyre, rather than just the purchase price. Part worns have substantially less tread than a new tyre, so you’ll need to replace it much more quickly – potentially very quickly. The average cost per mm of useable tread of a part worn tyre is £6.33 per mm, compared to £5.32 per mm for a new tyre.

If tyres do need to be replaced but money is tight and you’re considering buying part worn (or used tyres) check to ensure you are fully informed of their dangers and the false economy, they represent. Investigations by TyreSafe and Trading Standards across the UK found that 94% of retailers inspected are selling tyres illegally.

With the Met Office yellow warnings still firmly in place, it’s vital that drivers are ensuring that their tyres are in tip top condition and that their tread depth is within the legal limit to avoid experiencing the frightening phenomenon of aquaplaning. Tyres become much more likely to aquaplane with a tread depth less than 3mm, meaning it is advisable to monitor your tyre’s tread regularly and closely. When it gets below this point, although still legal, the tread is much more likely to affect handling and safety in wet conditions.
