‼️‼️New DVSA guidance: swapping driving tests ‼️‼️

DVSA has now published guidance on how learners can swap a driving test with another learner.

Here are the main points:

From 12 May 2026 learners can only swap their own car driving test with another learner driver.

To swap:

You both need to already have a test booked
You both need to want each other’s exact test slot
The swap must be done by phone
Both learners must agree to the swap with DVSA

Important to know:

A test swap counts as one of your 2 allowed changes
You must request the swap at least 10 full working days before the earliest test
Driving instructors and websites cannot swap tests for you

From 9 June 2026 there will also be a location rule for test centers.

Before agreeing to a swap:

Check your instructor is available
Make sure you are ready for the new test date
Do not share personal or payment details with another learner

Approaching a roundabout too fast?

Roundabouts feel harder when you come in too fast

If you rush the approach you have to do everything at once

Check mirrors
Signal if needed
Choose your position
Control your speed
Look right and judge the gap

That is a lot for a learner

Use your MSPSL routine in good time

Speed
Look

A slower approach gives you:
👀 More time to look
🚗 More time to judge the gap
🎯 More control

You are not trying to get there quickly
You are trying to get there ready

Planning Ahead !!!

Don’t just look at the car in front

When you’re driving try to look further ahead

You might spot:

🚌 A bus stopping
🚶 A pedestrian waiting to cross
🚗 Parked cars narrowing the road
🔴 Brake lights in the distance
🔄 A roundabout or junction coming up

If you see things early you have more time to slow down change position or get ready

That’s what planning ahead means

It’s not about guessing
It’s about giving yourself more time

Moving off too early can cost you your driving test

When moving off from the side of the road do not rush just because you see a gap

Use your POM routine

Prepare – get the car ready
Observe – check all around , effective observations
Move – signal if needed then go when it is safe

Before moving ask yourself quickly

Will I make the car behind slow down
Will I make them stop
Will I make them swerve

If the answer is yes then wait

You will not fail for waiting
You can fail for moving off when it is not safe

📢From today (1 April), you will only be able to make 2 changes to a car driving test booking.
A change counts as:
✅ changing the date or time
✅ changing the test centre
✅ swapping your appointment with another learner who has a test booked
If you need to make more changes after you have used your 2 changes, you will need to cancel your test and book a new one.

If you're looking for a test date from April onwards, keep in mind:

​You get 2 changes maximum.
​You can only move tests to nearby centres.
​Your instructor can’t book for you anymore !!
