It’s been 3 and a half months since my dear friend and mentor died. I’ve not been able to post about it as I have tried to ignore the huge chasm her death has left in my everyday life. The most I could do was post a picture on my profile, so I could still see her every day.
A woman to inspire to be more like, a voice of calm reminders and a voice that can carry storms. “My darling Abbie, lift your face to the sun, breathe it in, you are magnificent. Watching you grow has been so beautiful and inspiring my love. Keep being the wonderful you and keep supporting women and couples. You are a doula from your very bones my beautiful friend. And remember don’t let the bastards drag you down, you are powerful, that’s full of power my love, use it to do all the good works.”
One of the last voice notes I have from Maddie. And I listen to it with eyes closed and hand on heart. She lives on in the passion I carry into my birth work and with every interaction I have with women, partners, midwives and consultants.
Bringing people together in a room that holds invisible division lines. Remembering the stories that our bodies can do hard things, that we are built for birth and that however a birth story unfolds we can hold the woman and her partner at the centre of that journey, with love, respect and enough time to hold themselves, and make the choices that feel right for them.
Maddie taught me to leave my own bags at the door, to sway in silence, to linger in the shadows with half closed eyes, always to observe the room and only glide in when needed. I learnt that the liminal spaces in birth are sacred, they deserve space, time and peace to play out as they should.
Maddie, I miss you every day but I carry you with me every step. I see you in the well needed rain fall during a long labouring birth, I notice your nudges of encouraging words in my head, when I’m spent and think I have no more to give…
Thank you Maddie. I am so grateful to have met you, I’ve learnt so much from you, felt your fierce support when I needed it most, laughed out loud from my very core with you, swam in icy cold norfolk seas and most of all to have called you my friend. Love you Maddie 💜💜💜
