Autumn is coming, is your static caravan ready for it?

If you're using a caravan as a living space this Winter, it's worth running through a few basics before the temperature drops.

Check that the central heating is working properly and get it serviced if it hasn't been done recently. Inspect the roof and seals for any signs of water ingress, damp caught early is a minor fix, left over winter it becomes a much bigger one. Make sure pipes are lagged and that you know how to isolate the water supply if you need to. Keep gutters and downpipes clear.

A modern double glazed, centrally heated static from a reputable manufacturer will handle a UK winter comfortably. It's just worth giving it a quick once-over before the cold sets in.

Buying a static caravan on private land? Here's what to think about before you commit.

Planning permission. Depending on your intended use, you may need permission from your local authority before siting a caravan. It's worth checking early rather than after you've bought.

Ground preparation. The site needs to be level and stable. Poor ground conditions cause problems further down the line and are worth sorting properly from the start.

Utility connections. Water, electricity and gas all need to be factored in. A caravan is straightforward to connect up, but it needs to be planned.

Size and access. Larger twin units need wider access routes for delivery. We can advise on this before you buy.

We offer a pre-purchase site survey for £295, fully refundable if you go on to buy from us. It takes the guesswork out of the whole thing.

New or used? It's the question most buyers come to us with.

The answer is that it depends on what you need it for and what you want to spend.

A used static from a reputable manufacturer like Willerby or ABI, manufactured after 2005 and in good condition, will give you reliable year-round living at a fraction of the cost of new. For self-build hire, staff accommodation, or a first purchase on a tighter budget, used is often the smarter call.

A new caravan makes sense if you want the latest specification, manufacturer warranty, and the reassurance of knowing exactly what you're getting from day one. If you're investing in a long-term living solution for a family member, or want a lodge built to your own spec, new is worth the extra.

We stock both and will tell you honestly which suits your situation. Come and see them side by side.

Thinking about selling your static caravan but waiting for the right moment?

It's a reasonable instinct, but the timing question is more nuanced than most people realise. Late winter and spring tend to be the busiest period for buyer and dealer interest, but a well-maintained caravan can sell at any time of year. And in some cases, waiting for peak season actually leaves you worse off once you factor in pitch fees, insurance, maintenance and depreciation adding up in the meantime.

There's also more to think about than just the season. The age and condition of your caravan, whether it has double glazing and central heating, the layout, and even how accessible it is for collection all have a bigger effect on price than the time of year you choose to sell.

We've written a full guide covering seasonal trends, what actually drives market value, the pros and cons of selling privately versus through a dealer, and how to prepare your caravan to get the best possible price.

Worth a read if you're weighing up whether now is the right time.
