134% DPF soot load… but barely any backpressure. Something wasn’t adding up. 👀🔧

This Astra came to us after repeatedly failing its MOT emissions test and throwing out serious black smoke.

The scanner was telling us:
💨 134% calculated DPF soot load
❌ 27 aborted regenerations
📉 But the pressure readings didn’t match a heavily blocked DPF
✅ EGR operation checked
✅ Turbo boost actual vs desired checked
✅ VNT position checked
✅ MAF / airflow data checked
✅ DPF pressure sensor response checked
❌ Forced regeneration wouldn’t complete

Instead of just replacing parts, we followed the data.

The ECU thought the DPF was heavily loaded… but the exhaust simply wasn’t showing the backpressure you’d expect from a filter that blocked.

So we went one step further.

Borescope into the DPF. 🔍

And there it was — the filter substrate had been drilled/removed through the centre, allowing exhaust and soot to pass straight through.

That explained everything:
➡️ Low restriction
➡️ Black smoke from the tailpipe
➡️ Strange soot calculations
➡️ Failed regenerations
➡️ Failed emissions test

We got the emissions system put right and sent it back for its MOT.

PASS ✅

From failed emissions to a clean MOT pass.

That’s the difference between reading a fault code and actually diagnosing a vehicle.

This BMW nearly set an ignition coil on fire… and the ignition coil wasn’t the real problem. 🔥⚡️

This 2014 BMW 118i N13 came to us with a cylinder 3 misfire. At first, you’d naturally be looking at the usual suspects — spark plug, ignition coil, injector, wiring.

But during testing, the cylinder 3 ignition coil started getting seriously hot.

So we swapped in a completely different coil.

Same cylinder. Same problem.

The second coil got so hot that it started melting and smoking.

At that point we stopped powered testing immediately, disconnected the battery and started working through the circuit properly. This is exactly why proper diagnostics matter. Replacing another coil might have just destroyed another coil — or worse.

Come back for Part 2 when the DME returns from testing and we find out whether the fault is actually inside the ECU. 👀

🎨 GRAFFITI / MURAL ARTIST WANTED – HORNCASTLE AREA 🚗

I’m looking for a talented graffiti or mural artist to help create something properly unique inside the new Drova garage near Horncastle.

Once the walls are painted black, I want to turn some of the space into a feature — automotive-inspired artwork, mechanical details, cars/engines, and the Drova branding worked into the design.

I’m not looking for generic signage or vinyl stickers. I want something hand-painted/sprayed that looks genuinely impressive when customers walk into the garage and also creates a great backdrop for our videos and social content.

If you’re a local artist or you know somebody around Lincolnshire who does this kind of work please tag them below or send me a message with some examples of previous work.

From snapped timing belt to running again 🔧

This Ford came in after the timing belt had sheared its teeth, throwing the engine timing out and damaging the rocker gear.

We stripped it down, rebuilt the camshaft and rocker assembly, reset the timing, carried out compression testing to make sure the valves had survived, then carefully rebuilt everything.

And this is the result… back together and running again. ✅

Jobs like this are exactly why proper diagnosis matters before throwing parts at a vehicle.

This Mercedes Sprinter came in with loss of power, heavy exhaust smoke and serious oil consumption.

During diagnosis we found excessive crankcase pressure, oil being pushed out around the rocker/cam cover, and the breather pipe heavily contaminated with thick oil sludge.

The likely cause is a restricted or failed crankcase breather / oil separator, although excessive internal engine blow-by still needs to be ruled out.

Next step: inspect the full breather system, check the intake for oil contamination and carry out compression/leak-down testing if required.

Don’t just replace the leaking gasket — find out why the pressure is there first.

A little bit of exciting news from us at Drova… we’ve got our own unit! 🚗🔧

It’s another big step forward for us and something we genuinely couldn’t have done without the people who have supported us so far.

Since starting Drova, we’ve been out on driveways, at people’s homes and businesses, diagnosing faults, repairing vehicles and doing everything we can to get people back on the road. Having our own unit now gives us the opportunity to do even more — particularly the bigger jobs and repairs that simply aren’t always practical to carry out mobile.

And don’t worry — we’re not stopping the mobile side of Drova. That’s a huge part of what we do and will continue to be. The unit just gives us another option and allows us to offer a much wider service locally, from diagnostics and servicing through to larger mechanical repairs.

There’s still plenty we want to do with the place and we’ll be improving it over the coming weeks, but we’re already getting stuck in. 🔧

More than anything, though, this post is just a massive thank you.

To everyone who has booked us, recommended us to somebody, shared one of our posts, left a review, messaged us or simply given a new local business a chance — thank you. It genuinely means a lot.

We want to build Drova into a business that this area can rely on. One that supports local people, works alongside other local businesses, creates opportunities as we grow and does whatever we reasonably can to help keep people moving.

We’ve got some big plans, but we want to grow the right way and stay a proper local business that looks after its customers.

So this is the next chapter. 💚

Mobile when you need us. A workshop when the job needs it. And the same Drova service either way.

Thank you for supporting local. 🙌

From a camshaft sensor fault… to finding the real reason this Ford wouldn’t start 👀

This one started with a P0341 camshaft position fault, no start, and no cam/crank synchronisation. We checked the sensor supply, back-probed the wiring, scoped the cam signal — and still had no proper camshaft activity.

So we went mechanical.

Once the timing cover came off, we found the real issue: the timing belt was still fitted and looked tight… but the teeth had completely stripped off at the crankshaft end. The crankshaft was spinning, but the belt wasn’t driving the camshaft.

That explains:

* the sudden cut-out while driving
* the crank/no-start
* the camshaft fault
* the missing cam signal
* and the loss of cam/crank synchronisation

Part 2: belt off, full inspection, checking pulleys/tensioner/water pump, finding out why it failed, then deciding the safest repair route.
