Getting Started – The Essentials

Under 17
• Provisional Licence: Apply three months before your 17th birthday, or from 16 if you receive mobility allowance.
• Legal Driving Age: From 17, you can drive a car on public roads in the UK.

• Private Practice: You may practise on private land if it’s securely gated and not connec

ted to public roads (note: supermarket car parks count as public roads). Check Your Eyes
• Make sure you can read a number plate in good daylight from:
• - 20.5 metres (old-style plates)
• - 20 metres (new-style plates, post-2001)
• If you wear glasses or contacts, always wear them when driving. Get Your ‘L’ Plates
• Display L plates (or D plates in Wales) at the front and rear of the car.
• You can only drive with a supervisor who:
• - Has passed their test
• - Is over 21
• - Has held a full licence for at least 3 years
• Plates must meet legal requirements – buy them, don’t improvise.
• Remove or cover them when a qualified driver uses the car. Our Lessons – Your TDS
• We create a tailored lesson plan to match your needs.
• We recommend at least 2 hours per week for best progress.
• You’ll receive a personal TDS Track Record logbook to monitor progress and keep parents updated. Your Theory Test
• Two parts: multiple-choice & hazard perception.
• You must pass both before booking your practical test.
• Just 3 hours of hazard perception training can reduce accident risk significantly. Your Practical Test
• Use your TDS Track Record to highlight strengths and areas for improvement.
• Practise between lessons (ensure insurance covers you if driving someone else’s car).

• Take a TDS Mock Test for a realistic trial run. Top 10 Reasons Learners Fail (DVSA)
• 1. Poor judgement when emerging from side roads
• 2. Incorrect use of controls/poor observation during reverse parking
• 3. Not checking mirrors early enough
• 4. Poor control/observation when reversing around a corner

Due to extremely icy and dangerous road conditions, all driving lessons for today have been cancelled.

The safety of our students and instructors is our top priority, and it would be unsafe to continue lessons in this weather.

We will contact all affected pupils to rearrange lessons once conditions improve.
