🔧 IFOR WILLIAMS OWNERS—IS THERE GREASE WHERE IT SHOULDN’T BE?

The number of Ifor Williams brake drums with sealed bearings we see coming through the workshop packed with grease is scary! 😳

These bearings are lubricated and sealed from manufacture. They don’t need any additional grease or repacking, and the drum cavity shouldn’t be filled with grease.

⚠️ Adding grease around a sealed bearing won’t lubricate its internal parts or fix wear.
⚠️ Damaging the seals to force grease inside can let dirt and moisture in, leading to premature wear.
⚠️ Grease on the brake shoes or drum’s braking surface can reduce braking performance.

A worn sealed bearing needs replacing—not another handful of grease!

🔍 Regular trailer servicing checks bearing condition, including roughness, noise and excessive play, helping identify problems before they become a breakdown.

“Sealed for life” doesn’t mean it lasts forever!

🐴🚜 Whether you tow a horse trailer, plant trailer or flatbed, at Unthank Trailer Services we check your bearings and brakes as part of every service.

This advice is for Knott brake drums fitted with sealed bearings—other bearing types have different maintenance requirements.

🔧 WHEN DID YOU LAST HAVE YOUR TRAILER’S TOWING HITCH CHECKED?

We’ve had quite a few trailers through the workshop recently with excessive wear in the towing hitch—including plant trailers, flatbeds and even horse trailers. 🚜🐴

It’s easy to concentrate on tyres and lights, but your hitch is the vital connection between your vehicle and trailer. Just because it clicks onto the towball doesn’t mean everything is in good condition!

Wear, damage or a locking mechanism that isn’t working properly needs attention. If you notice unusual movement, knocking or difficulty coupling up, get it checked before towing.

At Unthank Trailer Services, we inspect the coupling and check its operation as part of every service. If we find a problem, we’ll explain it and quote for the work needed. 🔍
