This year has been super busy with Towbar installations. But we often get asked about the different options available so here’s a quick explanation.
Do I need 7 pin or 13 pin electrics?
A 7 pin towbar plug will provide basic brake, indicator and tail light functions on your bike rack, trailer or caravan for simple towing.
13 pin electrics combines both the basic and advanced electrical features within one plug. If you are towing a caravan for example, it connects to your vehicles advanced features including trailer stability controls and provides power inside your caravan for appliances.
Fixed or Detachable Towbar?
If you only plan on using your Towbar for towing occasionally, we would recommend a detachable so you can remove and minimise the risk of catching your shin on it when loading/unloading your boot!
If you are towing everyday, for example work vans etc. A fixed Towbar would be the cheapest option.
How much?
Towbar prices can vary so much but expect to pay anywhere from £500-£1000 on average. (Detachable tend to be an extra £100-£150 over a fixed type)
Why do we only use vehicle specific wiring kits?
The majority of the time, these kits are more expensive than the Towbar it’s self! But these are designed to sync with your vehicle’s electrical system, and is the only wiring that will synchronise with your advanced vehicle functions.
In order to work correctly it will need to be professional programmed to your vehicle, this will enable your vehicle to adjust key systems such as, brake electronics, cruise control, parking aids, lane assist, suspension systems and much more.
We hope this has helped but feel free to call or email us for any more information if required 🙂.
