🚗 The Best Drivers Don't Stick to the Plan... They Change It.

One of the biggest differences I see between an average driver and an advanced driver isn't car control.

It's planning.

And even more importantly...

It's being prepared to change the plan.

As an ADI and advanced driver, I'm constantly asking myself:

➡️ What if that pedestrian steps out?
➡️ What if that car doesn't stop?
➡️ What if the road ahead changes?

A good driver doesn't simply follow the route they imagined. They adapt to the situation in front of them.

That's exactly what driving examiners are looking for too.

Passing your driving test isn't about driving perfectly. It's about showing that you can:

✅ Plan well ahead.
✅ Anticipate what others might do.
✅ Adapt safely when things don't go as expected.

The best drive is rarely the one that goes exactly to plan.

It's the one where the driver recognises the change early and calmly makes a better plan.

Remember:

Plan. Anticipate. Adapt.

Those three skills will make you a safer driver for life—and greatly increase your chances of passing your driving test.

Why Good Positioning Matters (For You AND Everyone Else on the Road)

When you position your vehicle poorly at a junction, you don't just make things harder for yourself—you create a bottleneck and a hazard for everyone else on the road.

In today's video, we are looking at a real-life example of exactly how I use defensive driving and space management to handle a poorly positioned car.

📐 WHY ROAD POSITIONING MATTERS

Watch how the driver ahead fails to apply Highway Code Rule 179, which states that when preparing to turn right, you should take up a position just left of the middle of the road to leave room for other vehicles to pass on the left. Instead, they've positioned in a way that blocks the entire lane, preventing anyone else from clearing the junction.

Because I was actively reading the road and predicting their movement, I didn't get squeezed. By keeping my lateral space buffer completely clear, I gave myself a built-in escape route. This allowed me to smoothly guide my car around their poor positioning without any drama, keeping the flow of traffic moving safely.

When you learn to position correctly, you make the road a safer, more efficient place for everybody.

How to Master Tewkesbury Cross Roundabout. Tewkesbury Cross is a roundabout that catches a lot of learner drivers out, especially when going straight ahead (towards the Town Centre / Toothill roundabout). Because of how the lanes are structured on approach, it’s easy to lose your positioning if you aren’t actively planning ahead.📐 How to Nail It (Towards Town Centre) The Approach: As you approach Tewkesbury Cross in this direction, you will see three lanes. To go straight ahead, you must use the middle lane as per the road markings. Keep Left on the Roundabout: As soon as you enter the roundabout, you need to check your left mirror and smoothly position yourself over to the left. Watch the Right Flank: It is absolutely vital that you keep to the left side of the lane once you are on the roundabout. If you drift or cut into the middle, you risk colliding with drivers in the right-hand lane who are turning right towards the M4. If you have a test this week, it's time to take full ownership.

The days of 'test finders' and third-party apps are over. New DVSA rules mean you manage your own booking. This is a positive change: it puts you in control, stops last-minute panic for tests you aren't ready for, and builds real accountability.

Before you head out, double-check your test centre and time, review your 'show me, tell me' questions, and make sure you have your provisional licence ready. Always verify your booking on the official GOV.UK portal only.

Passing isn’t just about the certificate; it’s about being safe for life. That starts with owning the process.
