Oily film on water coolant? Don’t ignore it!
Your engine’s oil and coolant should never meet. If they have, something inside has failed, and acting early can save you a much bigger bill. 💷
🔍 What to look for:
➡️ Brown, milky “mayonnaise” sludge in the coolant tank
➡️ An oily film floating on the coolant
➡️ Coolant that’s murky brown instead of clear
➡️ White exhaust smoke or coolant mysteriously disappearing
⚠️ What could be causing it:
➡️ Head gasket failure, the classic culprit
➡️ Oil cooler failure, very common on modern engines (especially diesels) and often mistaken for a head gasket
➡️ Cracked cylinder head or block, usually after serious overheating
🔧 Can it be fixed?Usually, yes! The key is finding the real cause first. We’ll pressure-test the system and check for combustion gases, so you only pay for the repair you actually need. Then we’ll flush the system properly so no oil is left behind to cause problems later.
🚫 Skip the “miracle in a bottle”Head gasket sealants are a sticking plaster at best, and they can block your radiator.
❄️ With colder weather on the way, now’s the perfect time to check your coolant. Do it with the engine cold, and never open the cap when it’s hot!
