🚨🚘🚨

1. You’ll spend more time on higher-speed and rural roads.

2. Reducing the number of stops during the test from 4 to 3.

3. Lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7.

4. Flexibility to the independent driving segment (this can be following a sat nav, traffic signs or both) to run for the full duration of the test.

So yeah… the test is becoming more real-world. Good luck — you’ve got this! 🏁

Parallel Park

1. Pull alongside the car

The examiner will ask you to park on the left side of the road before the nearest vehicle. Observe carefully before moving forward to begin your parallel park, checking mirrors and blind spots before proceeding. Wait for a clear road, approach slowly alongside the other car while signaling your intentions, then stop, cancel your indicator, and select reverse gear to begin the manoeuvre.

2. MSM and correct positioning

After positioning your car, make thorough all-round observations using your mirrors and blind spots, waiting for any vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians to pass before beginning to reverse slowly. Keep your speed low for better control. Line up the rear of the parked car with the middle of your back passenger window (first reference point). Continue checking your surroundings, then stop the car — time to turn the wheel one full turn to the left.

3. Start reversing into the space

With your car in position, perform your MSM routine and continue checking mirrors and blind spots as the front of your car will swing out toward the road. Watch for your second reference point — when your car is at a 45-degree angle — then turn one full turn to the right. Pause if needed to check for traffic or pedestrians before continuing.

Keep an eye on your third reference point (when you see in your mirror that you’re close enough to the kerb), then turn one full turn to the right. Move the car slowly, with frequent all-round observations, until your fourth reference point — when the car appears parallel to the kerb in your mirror, or lined up with the car ahead — then turn one full turn to the right to straighten up.

Make sure you don’t reverse more than two car lengths.

If adjustments are needed, move forward safely to correct your position, then straighten your wheels, select neutral and apply the handbrake.

Pull Up on the Right Manoeuvre

1. Find a suitable location to pull up.
When pulling up on the right, choose a spot that avoids blocking driveways, junctions, bends, bus stops or parked cars, as these can obstruct visibility or traffic flow.

2. MSM and correct positioning.
Before pulling up on the right, check your interior and right mirrors then signal right. Position your car as if making a right turn, give way to oncoming traffic if needed, and recheck mirrors.

3. Pull up on the right
Approach the kerb at a shallow angle so you don’t hit it and can line the car up parallel about 20–30 cm away. Once parallel, straighten the wheels, stop, apply the handbrake and select park/neutral.

4. Reverse and move off
After stopping, select reverse gear and check all mirrors and blind spots (right shoulder through to left shoulder) before reversing about two car lengths, keeping close to the kerb and stopping for any vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists if needed. Once complete, apply the handbrake, select park/neutral, then when instructed get ready to move off, recheck mirrors and blind spots, signal left if clear, and move off safely.

Throughout the manoeuvre, the examiner will be looking for:
• Careful observations
• Accuracy
• Control

The amount of tailgating I’ve seen recently is shocking.

Let me spell it out: nobody ever learned to drive without making mistakes.
Some are sudden.
Some are unpredictable.
That’s the reality.

Driving instructors aren’t just teaching we’re fighting to keep everyone alive on the road, including you.

So when you see L plates, back off. Keep your distance.
If you don’t, you won’t just be intimidating a learner you’ll be sketching those plates for your insurance company while explaining why you failed to anticipate, failed to leave space, and failed to drive responsibly.

Hopefully you’ll never find yourself in that position.
But if you do, you’ll wish you’d just given them room.

To those who already show patience and respect: you’re the reason the roads are safer.

You are noticed more than you think. 💕
