SEAKING GATE GUARDIAN- 99.99%

Very nearly there with the old girl, the red paint is restored and all ceramic coated, there are a few little bits I wants to do like the engine bay decals and danger signs which really break up the grey.

But it’s definitely SAR Red.

The main issue with cab has been how dry the paint is, being down in the corner of the airfield it’s open to every element.

Rain, salty & sandy winds, baking sun as well as all the fumes from the cars passing by.

That with the lack of protection made the paint so dry it literally built up a hard layer of chalk like substance all over it via oxidation turning the rich red to pink / white.

Now that layer has been removed, and it has a very hard and UV protective layer between it and the elements it will have a fighting chance against the Cornish elements.

A quarterly wash would no doubt help it also, just to keep the salt down and birds muck.

I reckon I have one more session left for some final touch’s and then it’s on to the Hawk.

All in all it’s roughly taken me ….40 odd hours and burnt through about 2L of cutting compound and most of my pads.

Such is the beast 🥳

A CRAZY 8 MONTHS

A little message from me, to all those out there that have shown me support and love over the coming 8 months.

And also just a word on struggle with one’s self belief I think it’s important to remember that we all have something to give even when we don’t believe it ourselves.

Hopefully this rings true for someone out there, it’s crazy times.

Another day on the SAR Seaking.

Love the transformation of this old girl, underneath all that oxidation she still has the shine I’m looking for.

Nearly done- needs a good wash and full, Ceramic coat

Another day on the Seaking Gate Guardian .

This time it was the Stbd side.

Was covered in oxidation as expected but not as bad as the port so was able to get the tail and the cab side done in 7 odd hours 😵‍💫.

Was a hot one- Onwards 📈

DIGGER DETAIL

Keeping with the current direction of detailing the different, I thought I would throw my hand at detailing a 13 Ton Digger 🤷.

Love doing all these different projects, I love my cars and my vans but what the real draw is with detailing is seeing one thing change from a bit of a mess to washed, polished and protected.

So the digger … was different.

ALOT of grease, luckily the we had some industrial agriculture degreaser at hand as apart from my solvent based tar remover nothing was touching it.

All the main joints were jammed with old grease so the cleaning of those sections was a plastic scraper and a ton of degreaser job.

Also removed all the old decals, and blew my heat gun up in the process 👏

Finished off with a deoxidation of the paint work and a 8 year ceramic coat to go.

Mud on , mud off 💦🙂‍↕️

A lot of the time much like the helicopter you just need to bring the whole armory and see what happens and adapt on the spot.

I find by doing these jobs I get a huge amount of experience and knowledge from how different chemicals can be used and what polishers and compounds work best .

All of which I can the use when I go back to the cars and vans which are in essence a bit more straight forward.

Either way here is the beast, happy with how the 2 day job went and now it’s a lot more factory spec and ready to get caked in mud.

And it was cool AF, although didn’t get to drive it but had loads of high tec kit on it 🥳.

Thankyou to everyone who has reached out reference the work being carried out on the Seaking gate guardian.

Also thankyou to everyone who had reached out reference their own mental health and stories, this is literally all I ever wanted from Dagger was for the work I do to maybe start a conversation that allows people to be their authentic selves.

Who would of thought detailing an old aircraft would do that.

So I applaud your courage . BZ

So alot of people have asked what I’m using etc and the process, and I’ve also been given some tips which I will 100% take on.

My ego does not excist in this process, it’s far too big . Especially with the SEAHAWK to come which has been outside for another few decades.

Hopefully this clears some questions up surrounding vehicle detailing also.

Seaking Gate Guardian Update #2

An update on the Paint Restoration on the Seaking, and I’m pleased to say one side ( of the red ) is pretty much complete.

Hopefully those driving into Helston can see the difference, she is a lot more Red than pink 🫠.

No one wants a pink cab coming to pick them
up out of the drink now do they 🌊🚁.

It’s been a job that has required a lot of adapting, which I don’t mind, it means I get to use all more toys and also comes with territory of working on older vehicles, which is what I love.

Restoring the old back to their formal glory🏆.

The cabs red sections now have a thick layer of Ceramic coating on the red sections which have been all deoxidized and rehydrated.

The coating will protect the paint from any further oxidation, it will still get covered in salt and carbon from the road and rain but it won’t still directly to the paint.

And It can’t stick very well to the coating ( as it’s slippery as ) it’s also UV resistant, bird poo resistant and all the rest which is why it’s so great for cars down in Cornwall and helos etc.

This coating has a 8 year endurance, BUT with a good wash routine of maybe twice a year post spring and Autumn it will last a lot longer.

For those that don’t know about Ceramic coatings - they differ from wax because they bond with the paint / clear coat on a molecular level where Wax is a sacrificial coating.

That’s why Wax only lasts max 12 months depending on what you wash it with, and Ceramics vary depending on cost.

This stuff cost £170 / 30ml sooo it’s been invested in, which is only right. 👏.

And this is also why the surface needs polishing as Ceramics can’t bond with oxidation 💡

I’ve still got a fair way to go but it’s nice to see it getting there.

And I’ll keep you updated

771 Seaking gate guardian - Restoration and Ceramic Coating

This aircraft is such a mix bag of oxidation levels and paint thickness

After spending nearly 4 hours doing one sponson and destroying half my pads.

The tail was a joy to work on.

( although at the end here my pad literally destroyed itself 🫠🚁)

Getting there, stbd side pretty much done 😝
