Why do some people treat driving lessons like they are optional until the last minute?
A requested post from a fellow ADI
Cancellations an hour before. Messages saying something came up. Or no message at all. And no payment either.
Let’s flip that for a second.
Imagine you get ready for work. You plan your day. You turn up… and your boss says, “Actually, go home. I don’t need you today.” No pay. No notice. Just lost income.
You would not accept that.
So why is it acceptable for instructors?
This job is not just sitting in a car giving directions.
It is planning every lesson. Managing risk. Watching the road, the mirrors, the learner, and everything developing around you at the same time. Keeping someone safe while they are still learning how to stay in control under pressure.
It is mentally demanding in ways people do not always see.
Now add the reality behind the scenes.
No sick pay. No guaranteed income. No fallback if you are unwell. No option to just not work and still get paid.
If we do not work, we do not earn.
Simple as that.
So when a lesson is cancelled last minute, that is not just an inconvenience.
That is lost time.
Lost income ,a space that someone else could have used and also time we could have utilised elsewhere remember we are humans and we have a life and families too.
This is not aimed at everyone.
I have a great group of pupils but I am going to start getting lessons prepaid at the time of booking as I have been told that the difference is clear.
People tend to respect your time more when they have already committed to it.
So maybe the question is this.
Is it about respect?
Is it about boundaries?
Or is it about how lessons are structured and paid for?
