CLEANER HARBOURS, NATURALLY 🦪🌊
This past Monday, the Chichester Harbour Charters Ferry was proud to be working alongside the wonderful team at Harbour Oysters, who are doing incredible work to help restore and protect our local waters.
Founded by sisters Poppy Irving-Johns and Lottie Johns, Harbour Oysters are reintroducing native oysters to Chichester Harbour and the South Coast, using the unused space beneath pontoons and jetties to help improve water quality and boost marine biodiversity.
Why oysters? 🦪
These remarkable little ecosystem engineers are natural water cleaners. An adult oyster can filter over 150 litres of water a day, helping to remove pollutants, stabilise sediments and create clearer, healthier waters for other plants and animals to thrive.
So far, Harbour Oysters have:
🦪 Reintroduced 25,620 native oysters
💧 Helped filter an incredible 3,843,000 litres of water every day
🌊 Established 10 sites across Sussex and Hampshire
Native oysters were once abundant in our local waters but have been severely impacted by overfishing, pollution and disease. By helping to bring them back, Harbour Oysters are giving future generations the chance to continue restoring these precious and endangered marine ecosystems.
We’re incredibly proud to support such an inspiring local initiative. 💙
