Although I plan every lesson, I also understand that circumstances can change once a pupil gets into the car.
Someone may have had a difficult day, feel more nervous than usual or need extra time to revisit something from their previous lesson. When that happens, I adjust the plan.
I would rather spend time helping a pupil feel settled and understand a skill properly than rush ahead simply because something else was planned.
Progress is not about completing a fixed list as quickly as possible. It is about developing safe driving skills and confidence that will last beyond the test.

Should you choose a one-hour, ninety-minute or two-hour driving lesson?

There is no single answer that suits everybody. The right lesson length depends on your experience, confidence, concentration and what you are currently learning.

A one-hour lesson may suit someone who prefers shorter periods of focused practice. A ninety-minute lesson allows more time to travel to different areas and practise a skill without feeling rushed. Two-hour lessons can be helpful for test-route practice, longer journeys or more detailed preparation, provided you remain comfortable and able to concentrate.

Longer does not automatically mean better. A lesson should be long enough to help you make progress without leaving you tired or overwhelmed.

We can review the lesson length as your experience grows. If you are unsure which option would suit you, please get in touch. I will be happy to talk it through without any pressure.

One of the most important parts of my job happens before the car even moves.

I take time to explain what we will be working on, why it matters and how we will practise it safely. You will always have an opportunity to ask questions before we begin.

I know that learners do not all build confidence in the same way. Some are ready to try something quickly, while others need more explanation and reassurance first. Both approaches are perfectly fine.

My lessons are shaped around the person sitting beside me, not a fixed timetable or expectation.

Feeling nervous about learning to drive is completely normal. For many learners, the hardest part is simply getting into the driver’s seat for the first time.

A helpful way to manage nerves is to focus on one small task at a time. You do not need to think about everything involved in driving at once. During your lessons, we can break each skill into clear, manageable steps and practise it at a pace that feels comfortable.

Try not to judge yourself when something takes more than one attempt. Mistakes are a normal part of learning and help us identify what needs a little more practice.

My aim is to create a calm environment where you feel able to ask questions and take your time. Confidence usually develops gradually as things become more familiar.

If nerves have been holding you back from starting or returning to lessons, you are welcome to get in touch for a friendly chat.

A big congratulations to Abi on passing her driving test.

It was a pleasure to help you with your driving skills and to help you prepare for your test. You stayed patient, listened carefully and continued working on the areas you found difficult.

Passing the test is a wonderful achievement, but becoming a safe and confident driver is just as important.

Well done, Abi. I wish you many years of safe and enjoyable driving.
