Cost of fuel: electric vs petrol/diesel

How will pay-per-mile impact the cost of running an electric car? We are expecting the government to propose an additional road tax based on mileage for electric and hybrid vehicles from 2028. This additional tax (called VED+) is designed to counteract falling revenues from petrol and diesel fuel duty as people switch to electric cars. It is not designed to make electric cars more expensive to run than petrol/diesel cars – in fact EVs will still offer substantial savings.

Labour make it easier and cheaper to own an EV!

In a bid to build a fairer, cleaner future where every family can benefit from cheaper, greener transport, a pioneering scheme for local authorities will expand access to cheaper at-home charging. This will include help for those without driveways using innovative cross-pavement technology. The Energy Saving Trust has found that cost savings are highest when you charge at home on an EV tariff, which can work out as low as 2p per mile.

The Government has also pledged a £63 million boost for Britain’s charging infrastructure. The UK’s charging network has reached a record 82,000 public chargepoints, with a further 100,000 expected to be installed before 2030.

Other initiatives announced today include immediate changes to allow larger EV charging hubs to be signposted from major A-roads for the first time. EV charging hubs have more than doubled in the last two years and the Government is committed to boosting charging for long journeys. £400 million is allocated in the Spending Review to support charging infrastructure including on the strategic road network.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said:

“We are making it easier and cheaper to own an electric vehicle. We know access to charging is a barrier for people thinking of making the switch, so we are tackling that head on so that everyone – whether or not they have a driveway – can access the benefits of going electric.”

In an epic and very successful roadtrip yesterday, we stopped to charge three times (fitting in with our own comfort requirements and plans). At each stop the charge started first time using contactless pay by card, we didn’t have to queue and the speed of charging achieved was as expected. For example at bp-pulse we got 48.2kW from a 50kW charger all the way to 65% state of charge which was plenty to get us to our next destination.

It isn’t always like that we know, but more and more we are finding that charging on the road does not mean a drama llama! For this trip a big Bravo to on the M6 south of Manchester, to on the University of Birmingham campus and to at the hub in Banbury just off the M40. It wasn’t all coffee and comfort breaks, we also took in the Lapworth museum of geology, kept up to date with emails and bought a Kia EV6. Living the electric dream!
