The recently launched Land Rover Discovery 5 probably has one of the most contentious rear design features of recent times with it's slightly off centre rear number plate. We're told that it's a nod to previous generations of Discovery that had offset number plates (which were functional as they used to carry a spare wheel on the back door, or had a split tail gate).

Being such a love it or hate it design element has now led lead designer Gerry McGovern to say that one of the reasons people don't like it is because dealers are fitting the wrong size rear number plate. The car was designed to have a standard sized rear plate, not the oversized plate that a lot of dealers are fitting.

One thing's for sure - regardless of the number plate placement Land Rover will sell the car in droves so probably aren't too concerned about the debate.

TVR is back (again) with it's first new car since the company was taken over by its present owner in 2013. The new Griffith (a nod to TVRs past) was revealed at the Goodwood Revival this morning.

Could this be what TVR needs to stay back in the frame for good, or is it going to face far too much competition from the more established, less niche brands?

Either way it's going to be fascinating to see how the latest rebirth of TVR progresses.

Who knows what the car-shunning Millennials make of it all, but for an entire generation of sports car fans, TVR equates to unruly high performance, perilous sideways excursions and, if we’re completely honest, a frequently challenging ownership experience.

Something to bear in mind if you're going car shopping anytime soon. Don't think you're going to escape by buying electric or hybrid either - the original sales price will have a bearing on the VED charged for the first five years of the car's life whether you bought it new or used.

The new system will replace the current one for all new cars registered after April 1 2017, and it will result in higher running costs for some models.
