Update on Border Reivers helping to find the history of a Scottish delivered Porsche 911S which had found its way around the world.
Mikes story:-
I bought my 1972 2.4 S back in 1991. They were not especially valuable cars back then. I think I paid £12000 for it. The car had clearly had a hard life and was showing signs of rust in the doors and around the windscreen. I was living in Hong Kong at the time and had it shipped out there. I drove around in it out there for about 5 years and it was a bit of a rolling repair project. I had history with the car from 1978 but nothing before that. Over the years I tried to find out the early history of the car but with no luck. All I knew was that it came from Glen Henderson in Ayr back in March 1972. I tried to trace its history through the DVLA but they flatly refused to give me any information. It was pretty frustrating. I sold the car in 2000 as I needed the money for a house purchase but always regretted selling it. So bored during Covid I tracked it down and bought it back. Since then it’s had a lot of work and is now in very good shape. I still had the problem of the missing early history so tried really hard to find out what I could. I wrote dozens of letters to previous owners and to individuals in Scotland with the original owners surname which I discovered through the Porsche Club. Nothing worked.
Then a good friend suggested I talk to Tom at Border Reivers as they know all things air cooled in Scotland. I contacted Tom and he kindly suggested putting a post up on his social media channels. Amazingly, within 12 hours he was able to connect me to the man who collected my car from Glen Henderson and drove it back to Edinburgh with the original owner. Not bad after nearly 54 years!
I now know far more about the car and had a great chat with Kenny Dunn who collected the car. So I’ve filled in a really important part of the car’s history. Huge thanks to Tom and Border Reivers. And of course to Kenny for coming forward and giving me so much information.

Hi Tom, just got this from Kenny. Pretty bloody amazing after all these years! Strange that it was ordered via a Lotus garage. All this is thanks to you so thank you again. Mike
To whom it may concern:
Porsche 911S 2.4

I started out in business on 1st September 1969, aged 18, running Longstone Car Sales, in Edinburgh, in partnership with
Grant Sutherland
( who was a butcher but invested in various businesses with friends)
He was a great car lover, having Lotus Cortina, Elan & Elan +2S 130, but always hankered after a Porsche 911.
Late 1971, we ordered via Sportstune ( Lotus agents outside Edinburgh) from Glen Henderson motors in Ayr ( the Porsche & Lancia agent for Scotland) a 1972 model 911S 2.4 in ‘tangerine’ with extras including recarro seats, electric sunroof, passenger door mirror for delivery early 1972.
When the car was ready for collection I accompanied Grant through to Ayr, using a Rover 2000 from stock, my inclusion was twofold,
1. As a driver through to Ayr
(Some 70 miles) &
2. To pay for the car from the car business, I remember this very clearly as it was the largest cheque I had ever written- £5,212.00, to put this into perspective my new 3 bed flat in Edinburgh had cost £7,100 earlier that year!
Glen Henderson was an absolute perfectionist & his showroom in Beresford Terrace, Ayr was finished to an incredible standard for 1972, including special tiled floors & dark tinted glass, more expected in central London than provincial Ayr.
He was also a former trials bike rider & speed skater who later built an Olympic standard ice rink in Ayr.
On our return journey Grant stopped half way & allowed me to drive the 911 the rest of the way.
This was amazing for a then 20 year old & needless to say I was smitten such that I saved up & bought my own 911 in 1973 ( a 1970 2.2, also in orange, the first of many.
This led to me becoming Scotland’s oldest & largest (at the time) Porsche specialist retailer.
Fast forward to 1974 after the 1973, oil crisis & property crash & subsequent recession, Grant was needing to sell the 911, I was tasked with the job & sold it to a BMW dealer in Northern Ireland - Jack Walker & I believe it then turned up in London.
Amazing that we were able to fill in the gaps to a car that sold when I was still in junior school
Thanks To Kenny Dunn 🙏🏻
