Congratulations to Kieran White on passing his practical driving test today at Paisley test centre at his 1st attempt with 1 minor which is a great achievement in itself. You managed to keep your nerves under control which gave you this result and drove well with a compliment from the examiner which are like hens teeth! Enjoy your new found freedom and don’t forget to send me a picture when you get your new car although your choice of colour is questionable 🥴🎣🤣🤣.

Are We Asking Too Much of Driving Instructors… or Just Not Understanding the Job?

Everyone thinks they know what we do.
Sit there.
Give directions.
Get someone through a test.

Simple.
That version of the job does not exist anymore.

Every lesson is pressure.
Real roads.
Real risk.
Real consequences.

We are not just watching traffic.
We are predicting it.
Preventing it.
Intervening in seconds when it goes wrong.

And at the same time…
We are managing anxiety.
Panic.
Overthinking.
Confidence that disappears mid-roundabout.

We are adapting for neurodivergent learners.
Rebuilding people after collisions.
Supporting adults who have not driven in years.
Sitting beside someone whose hands are shaking before the engine even starts.
Giving pupils the tools to keep themselves safe after passing their practical test and for the rest of their driving career.

But here is the part no one talks about.
We are expected to do all of that…
calmly…
consistently…
professionally…

While the world outside the car gets worse.
🚘 Costs rising
⏰ Test delays stretching months
📱 Drivers distracted and impatient
🧠 Learners under more pressure than ever

And still…
People think we are “just instructors.”

No.
We are risk managers.
We are decision makers.
We are the barrier between a mistake and a collision.

And most of it goes unseen.
So next time you get frustrated behind a learner car, ask yourself this:

Would you want that responsibility?
Would you want to sit there, knowing one missed moment could change everything?

This is not just a job anymore.
It is responsibility at a level most people will never experience.

The Driving Test Journey
More Than Just a Pass

I have celebrated countless test passes over the years.
The smiles.
The relief.
The proud phone calls home.

Those moments never get old.

But there is another side to this journey that deserves just as much respect.

The pupil who does not pass.

The nerves.
The build up.
The pressure.
The quiet drive back afterwards.

Every person who books a driving test is carrying more than just a provisional licence. They carry expectation, hope, self belief and sometimes fear.

The test is not easy. It is designed to stretch you. Behind every pass certificate is preparation, hard work and resilience. Behind every unsuccessful attempt is also hard work and resilience.

When one of my pupils does not pass, I see the effort that went in. I know the hours of practice, the improvements made, the confidence built. It can feel heartbreaking in that moment.

I am proud of every single pupil who turns up and gives it their all.

Taking a driving test takes courage.
Facing the possibility of not passing takes even more.

To my pupils, past and present:

Do not give up.

You have already done something many people are too afraid to do. You stepped forward. You tried. You put yourself in a position where you could grow.

An unsuccessful test is not a judgement on your worth.
It is not a label.
It is not the end.

It is feedback.

Here is what truly matters:

☑️ Be kind to yourself
☑️ Recognise what you did well
☑️ Identify where you can improve
☑️ Practise with purpose
☑️ Build consistency
☑️ Talk about how you feel
☑️ Treat yourself as you would treat a friend

Many excellent drivers did not pass first time.
It is more common than people admit. What separates those who succeed is not perfection. It is persistence.

I am emotionally invested in every person I teach. Your progress matters to me. Your confidence matters to me. Your safety matters to me.

When you pass after a setback, that moment means even more. It represents resilience, growth and determination.

The freedom feels different.
The accomplishment feels earned.

This journey is about far more than a certificate.

It is about becoming capable, confident and safe for life.
