Had something bugging me for while. The Beetle is new game for me, not had anything carb related since my 1st car but i am loving the relearning of everything. Always thought it was a bit weak for 1700cc and 700kg. Been niggling for a while and it would not go away.
Old exhaust was a 4 into 2 into 1 into 2 straight through and that went south about a month ago in spectacular style that even the traffic cops were impressed. Fitted a new stainless 2 into 1 with each bank being seperate, wanted to check the fuelling was at least adequate on each bank so bought a gas analyser and stuck it up the bum of the patient. N/S was 0.2%, thought the machine as broke and recalibrated and again it was the same. Tried the O/S bank and it was 2.9% (Air-cooled VW like 3% to help cool the piston crowns). Got the balance tool out and both were drawing equal, checked compression and all within 5% of each other. Concluded that N/S bank was getting very little fuel and the car had basically been a 2 cylinder 850cc
Done a hard reset on both carbs and now both carbs are 3% but HC is high on the N/S at 1000ppm and 500 od on the O/S, gonna add a SVDA dizzy soon and see if that helps and if not i will add another degree and run it on 97 RON
Took the car out a test drive and it now feels like a 700kg 1700cc car. Very little throttle gets it moving compared with previous mash it and ride it like a mad man. Cruises lovely at 60 mph on light throttlke where rpeviuos it was mash it like a mad man and it would die at the slightest hill
In other news i also bought a cheap ass welder and moved the lights, not welded in nr 30 years but well chuffed. I am thinking the new light/number plate combo works for me better than on the exh. Looking fwd to fabricating some stuff for the car as my confidence grows again
