π€ π₯ COWBOYS AND FIRE HAZARD! π₯π€
We've posted many times before warning to avoid the fake 'cowboy mechanics' there's plenty of unqualified, uninsured and unregistered 'mobile mechanics' out there! We are one of the only few mobile mechanics within the central belt of scotland! As before we will NOT attend a job that one of these unofficial mechanics have attended and botched together or left unfinished! There's a reason they're quote is cheap! If they attend in a car rather than a sign written van this is your first red flag of how the jobs going to go!
This case attached is a little different as this customer had bought this car from a small dealership, less than 2 months later we were called out to a non start, we attended and found the positive LIVE cable detached from the terminal! Someone has previously replaced the terminal which in turn is okey but they've use the complete wrong size connector for this cable which has caused it to became detached and thankfully hadn't earthed out anywhere which could have caused a potential fire! The battery was also in poor health so we supplied and fitted a new bosch battery along with a new wiring repair to make this safe! The customer was also made aware at the time that the battery holding clamp was previously missing and wiring around the fuse box and in the fuse box area had signs of previously been investigated as clips were missing and wiring routed everywhere!
A month later we received a call from the customer to say the vehicle had no ignition lights on so we attended the vehicle again and began our checks to find a blown fuse for the immobiliser starter system. We replaced this fuse and tried again as soon as we went to start it blew the fuse, we then replaced the fuse and tried just turning the ignition on without starting and found the ignition comes on and stays on but as soon as you try start it blows the fuse, the customer said the dealership told them it had 2 different keys as the ignition barrel was replaced, one key for the doors and fuel flap and one key for the ignition. We removed the steering covers to check for faults at this replacement ignition barrel to be greeted with this absolute bodge job! The wiring has shown signs of overheating and melting, a piece of HOUSEHOLD CABLE was wrapped around the wiring with no insulation and no fuse! Completely bypassing the safety systems! Following the wiring it leads out the fire wall through a man made drill hole again with no protection from earthing out if chaffed through, along the engine to the starter motor! This is to by pass the control module for the start mode but is a massive fire risk as seen already with wires already melting! The customer was advised that this job would have to be referred onto the auto electrician to Firstly repair all this wiring to the standard wiring set up and in a safe condition then fault find the original fault that this previous person had by passed! This was going to lead into hundreds of pounds for the customer who has previously already spent money on the car! The customer was then advised to contact citizens advice for consumer rights help with this as the car had been purchased just over 2 months ago from a dealership, the rights the customer had would cover them for 6 months especially when this fault had been known by the dealership who inturn have botched it to get it sold!
This is a massive fire hazard throughout and the more wiring was looked at the worst it got! Always be aware of who's working on your vehicle! There's too many cowboys out there! Why spend thousands on your vehicle just to let an unqualified, uninsured and unregistered 'mechanic' work on it! The biggest red flag is how cheap they are compared to a genuine mechanic quoted! As the saying goes if you pay peanuts you get monkeys! The next red flag is when they appear in a car with a bag for life full of tools! Or when the only times they're avaliable is in the evenings or weekends! Always do research on who your going to get to work on your property's!
We offer a FREE no obligation quote! We are also fully registered, insured and qualified!
